BIKE Channel Canyon could make British Debut at Perfs?

New Kit yet to be launched?
New team BIKE Channel Canyon look set to make their British debut at the 2017 Perfs Pedal race. The new team team, managed by former Pedal Heaven DS Tim Elverson includes two former winners of the south coast classic in its newly released team rosta. Experienced Chris Opie won Perfs in 2012 with rising star Rory Townsend adding the race to his growing palmares this year (2016). Townsend also impressed at the 2015 edition, a race dominated by ONE PRO Cycling. BIKE Channel Canyon have not confirmed they will be in Hampshire on February 12th next year but the UCI Continental team will probably ride a mix of domestic & continental races and Perfs will be an ideal opportunity for the team to lay a marker down for the season.

Dave Williams Talks 80's Cycling, Hot Dog Circuits & Famous Names

Tour of Lancs 1984
"I loved it all,the cut and thrust, all the larking about at the end, i love all that, when the gloves are off at the end i love it, when everyones kicking bits out of each other, moves are going in, in a crit it happens straight away, in a road race you have to be patient. Thats what i get a buzz out of, at the end of a race, the last lap, everyone starts racing, love it!

Dave Williams story could so easily have been different, the product of a 1970s comprehensive education, with no interest in lessons it was easier to stare out of the window, there were plenty of distractions for a teenager growing up on Merseyside. Southport offered few opportunities,to say the bike saved him would be melodramatic but it did offer him another way to make his mark.

."I always used to go out on my bike after school, you know, cow horns, insulation tape, just mucking around, i did enjoy bikes. i started racing when i was a schoolboy, just a few pals really, one pal in particular, he was into his bikes and stuff i bought a bike off him a proper dropped handlebar bike, i was always mechanically interested and just starting racing on the back of that. I bought the bike myself, I lived with me mam, she was not as interested as i was, she probably though it was just a phase. I was that hooked on it the last few years in school i would go in, get my mark then go out cycling. The teachers may have cared but i certainly didn't I failed all my exams, went to college and failed them all again, i was very consistent but i had really got the cycling bug then".

Williams forged a career racing as an amateur, a professional and back to amateur again through the British boom times of the mid eighties to the doldrums of the nineties. Prize money was good but the lottery funded, supported British Cycling pathway was not even a blueprint, you had to find your own way back then..

"Merseyside was very strong, i was rubbish to start with, very mediocre, i starting doing a few club 10s, deep down i hated them but i was actually quite good at them. I quickly progressed and was doing some reasonable times and road racing at weekends. we used to ride out and back it was the only way we could get to races, that and scrounge lifts. I started knocking around with Nigel Simpson as a second year junior, Nigel was very good, riding the Peter Buckley races, which I did not do, we travelled to the National championships together and there were all these names you had read in the comic, Chris Lillywhite, Peter Georgi, Bobby Holden.... Nigel won the race and i won the sprint for third place, i was absolutely over the moon, wow all these people i had been reading about and i had just snotted them all in the finish."

Certainly no scholar but definitely a quick learner..

" I got my first win at Blackpool, it was a hotdog circuit, up and down the cones on the seafront, probably not a fantastic field, i hate coming out of dead turns so i took my chance, so, "he who dares Rodney", i finished up winning. once you realise that sometimes taking a chance pays off you are more inclined to do it. I was pretty strong i had a reasonable finish, who cares if you lose, you have to be prepared to lose to win."

Claiming his dole money "£48 quid a fortnight signing on on a Thursday." Williams turned senior in 1984 and was starting to get noticed. Talking to Dave at the Primera Cycle Expo in Bournemouth was a trip into 1980s cycling history, the timeline, like the memory maybe a little hazy but that just adds to the nostalgia. Endless anecdotes liberally sprinkled with familiar names, all delivered in that pulling a fast one, soft scouse lilt made for an engaging, entertaining couple of hours, although it was hard to get a word in!

"I had raced a lot in "85, the Kirby CC was very strong, myself, Nigel, Doug Dailey & John Cavannah went to Ireland and rode the Guinness 800, i think it was a week long race, i rode ok, stage racing really brought my form on and after that i won the Divisional champs, Merseyside was a really strong Division, that was a big win and one of my heroes, Mark Bell was watching. My first Star trophy race was over the North York moors, it finished on Redcar seafront, i forget the name of the race, Paul Curran and me ended up coming into the finish together, Paul i am sure would agree, is a cunning track rider and i was a bit gullible senior rider although on Merseyside we pride ourselves on winning at all costs even if it made you unpopular. i remember cussing Paul all the way on the run in to the finish, i tried jumping him but could not get rid of him, the writing was on the wall, so i though the threat of violence was my only option left, i explained to him if he even though about doing what he was thinking about doing he would have to suffer the consequences, of course he beat me in the sprint, it was a very valuable lesson. At the finish i remember jumping on top of him, probably Albert Hitchen, who was a national selector & Jim Hendry pulled me off him, i did not know who the hell they were. Once they had pulled me off Paul they said " You've done a really good ride and would i ride for Great Britain at a stage race the following week". I went from wanting to kill Paul to riding for GB.
I would never say i was a talented bike rider because i am not but what i did do was work hard and would get back what i put in, i was more of a grafter, i put a lot into my training back then, what i lacked in talent i made up for in enthusiasm. Cyclists tend to fall into two categories; naturals & grafters, and grafters are not necessarily riders who graft during the race but graft during the week in training. I raced in Germany at the Rhineland-Pfalz, a stage race i remember, it was a tough race with Olaf Ludwig, the world amateur champion, eleven stages, Stephen Farrell was there, he was a good lad Steve, on one stage a break had gone up the road, i said to Steve " i gonna take a chance, do you fancy chipping across he said no but i went for it, we had a good lead on the finishing circuit and some of the guys were riding for the overall, no one knew who i was so i took off, no one followed and i won the stage. The guys who had just pulled me off Paul Curran then gave me the chance to go to Belgium for a four day race, to see if i could repeat the process. I had come out of nowhere now there was talk of me going to the amateur worlds, i had had no career as a junior, no real carer as a senior really. In Belgium it was the nucleus of what could be the Worlds team, me Dave Mann, Paul Watson......it was pouring with rain, i hate the rain, i see the Belgium national champion go up the road (Johan Capiot) so i chipped across to him, we were swapping turns on the finishing circuit, i was sat behind him and i could see the lights from the cars behind on the back of his calves, they were really close so i jumped him and won the stage, they had to take me to the worlds, i was 19, wasn't real that assed about going! I was the youngest, me, Dave Mann, Tim Stevens & Pete Longbottom, we did ok in the team time trial, i cant remember where we finished but we finished respectably, 1.57 or something for 100km."

A crash in the road race spoilt the day for the team.In 1986, riding for Paragon RT, Dave Williams , Rob Holden, Keith Reynolds, & Chris Walker won the RTTC National Team Time Trial Championship. Williams went to France at the start of 86 with VC Fontainbleu, a good pal, John Parker fixed him up and he settled into flat on his own . "I felt it was what i had to do" Despite a couple of wins he never really settled and was happy to get back to the UK:

"I had a message to ride the Tour of Normandy for GB, Chris Walker, Chris Lillywhite, Simon Cope, Cayn Theakston, i cant remember who else, i have seen a picture of us in these crazy old tracksuits, it pissed down i hated it. One good thing did come out of it though, the lads encouraged me to come back to the UK and ride for the Paragon team, with a view to turning pro the following year. The team was the most elite amateur team in the country at the time, we got a retainer, really good kit, Campag super record, Gazelle bikes, Santini clothing, a proper race programme.
Some of the guys i was riding with were making a living at it, Dave Llloyd, Keith Reynolds,Alan Gornall, i was capable of doing it to, it was what i wanted to do, one hundred percent."

Did he think of himself as a professional cyclist?

"I was full time but definitely an amateur, i was racing mostly against professionals, there was not much support, some tubs, maybe a Jersey from GB, that had to be given back but never did! but there was a really healthy amount of prize money, even an evening race it would be fifty, hundred quid for a win, primes, 20, 30, 50 quid, you could come away with 150 quid in your arse pocket on a Tuesday night, nice to top up your dole money. We did all the races in 1986, Kellogs tour of Britain, we were pretty wet behind the ears, we just did what we always did. I did not have a great year in '87 and i was getting a bit disillusioned i had no prospects of a contract and to be honest i was earning more as an amateur than some pros. I rode for a Dutch team called Zero in 88, we did most of the classics, Gent-Wevelgem, Amstell Gold, Liege-Bastonge-Liege, Flech-Wallone but we never got paid so i quit."

Williams did not touch his bike for two years.

"I went on the piss, labouring on a building site, i did not see the point, getting paid a piffling salary, mates i had gone to school with were buying houses and XR3's and all these lads who were professional athletes were getting paid peanuts. I grafted really hard, got some money together and bought a house."

He was back on the bike in the early nineties, just for fun but in no time he was back racing, winning local stuff at first, then back to Premier calendars

"Things were going well and i went to the Tour of Mexico in 1993, we had a team of eight i think, Paul Curran, Rob Holden, Tim Hall, Tim Harris, John Charlesworth, Chris Lillywhite, it was a savage race, about three weeks long with some really big teams there. Only me and John Charlesworth finished but it set me up for the season, i won the Archer Grand Prix, stages in the Tour of Lancs, the Tour of the Kingdom, i had lots of good results including the National Criterium champs at Great Yarmouth, ahead of John Charlseworth & Matt Stephens, ("Matt Stephens is strong but he has not got much of a finish on him")
Along with Stephens,Roger Hammond, Jeremy Hunt & Chris Newton were all at the Great Yarmouth race, the names were getting younger?
"All kids, i was an old hand by now"

An old hand who was still in demand!

"Keith Reynolds offered me the chance to race for the Townsend team, i was flattered. I could get a lot of money as an amateur and i could race as much as i liked, as a pro you could only ride pro races,I really loved racing so i turned Keith down. The following year 1996 racing had become Open and i got invited to ride for Team Ambrosia with Rod Ellingworth, Mark Mckay, Rob Hayles and Tim Hall.We rode really well, i won Girvan that year and the Eddie Soens. Eddie Soens is like the worlds for us up north and i won it twice. In 95 riding for RT Italia, i got in the break with all the Kodak team which was pretty much the team pursuit guys. I was a bit savvy by this stage and managed to get rid of all of them and snotted Julian Ramsbottom at the finish, i was really made up. In 96 it was me Rod Ellingworth & Glenn Holmes, who was riding for a dutch team and i left them both, i think Rod came in second."

Dave went on to ride for Adidas-Scicon, a team that included, Paul Manning and a young Bradley Wiggins

"Bradley was very very talented, i did not have too much respect for him, he was a young upstart, years later at a wedding he told me he won the support race at the Crit champs in Great Yarmouth and had looked up to me."

Phew... he tells me he has hundreds of stories, i don't doubt it so i interrupt him with a few quick fire questions
Training?

"I was on the dole, i had all day everyday, we did not know what we were doing, we would just go out and mile eat, we got our quality miles from racing, back in those days we could race four or five times a week during the summer. There was no imput from GB. You were doing what your peer group did, if someone suggested doing a 20 minute interval we would have thought they were mad. We used to go out and ride three hours then ride a crit in the evening, we were knackering ourselves but everyone was doing it. I think modern training methods are good, look at British Cycling, we have gone from nothing to probably the best in the world, there is clearly a big effect. If you were serious you would not go out the night before a race, Pre race meal? a bag of chips, a marathon (snickers) and a can of coke."

The BC model?
"It seems to be the track is a vehicle for the road but if you have not got a passion for the track... i think a lot of guys slip through the net....its a science, if you can provide this many watts for four minutes you get a medal, if you get a medal we get funding, if we get funding we can reinvest. Ultimately without the system we would not be in the strong position we are in but it has taken a bit of the romance out of it. You have to have a lot of respect for the guys who go abroad and make it outside of the system."

Track Racing?
" I never rode much track, went down to Leicester for a laugh, had a few beers and rode the track. Up for 10 minutes, sat down talking, up for another 10, it wasn't for me"

Racing in the south?
"Doing the Havant Grand Prix, all i can remember is, i hated it, it was red hot and dead hard, we had driven down on the day, i was nailed the whole day, i finished"

What about todays domestic race scene?
"Terrible, yeah, the level of racing is high but the calendar is appalling now, there is not enough racing, a few premier calendars, the Tour series but what else is there? All the town centre races have gone, once a week on a Sunday and thats it and i dont envy the guys with all the traffic on the road."
Any Weekness?
"I was a big diesel, i had a good sprint from a small group but not from a big bunch."

These days?
The Boss
"I run my own business, Terry Dolan a good pal of mine introduced me to the Kuota brand, we assemble the bikes ,its grown and we do a lot of business with independant dealers like Primera. We also do Spinergy Wheels, GSG Clothing, and we have just started these new Powerpod Power Meters (the first meter to attach to the handlebars). I am sell something i am passionate about, i know the Kuota bikes inside out, i have ridden them all, if someone phones up with a problem, i can solve it, creaks, groans, which all carbon bikes have, i can solve it, i consider myself very knowledgeable .

Now 51,Dave still races and holds a 2nd cat licence "The races are a little bit safer than the 3rds" he says

"I race TLI a lot, against all my old adversaries, its good, riding with blokes your own age is good, i like the BC races but lets be honest a fifty year old cant complete with 20 year old lads although i have won a couple of races."

Do they know who Dave is?
Most of them dont, i have to give them a bollocking, i just sit behind them and say "sorry i'm not working, i wouldnt have had the cheek to ask a fifty year old to work, its not a popularity contest, get rid of me! I am sitting here, get rid of me"!

Bournemouth Arrow CC 50 Mile Reliability Trial

Ride Briefing!

Since its return to the local winter calendar in 2013 the Bournemouth Arrow CC 50 mile reliability trial has proved to be a great success. Eighty four riders left Bisterne village hall on this latest edition, the final Sunday in November offering dull, listless conditions. Heading north to Crow and skirting Ringwood, the fords at Poulner & Moyles Court were thankfully dry, the race bikes, deep rim wheels and tri bars, a sign of the times rather than a reflection of the weather. Up to Sandy Balls & the Fighting Cocks public house, there is a joke there but i wont bother. The climb out of Woodgreen goes on a bit and things go quiet through Hale, Woodfalls and Lover, the grippy parcours reliably tough. The grovel out of Nomansland is equally reliable but the pace picks up across the old aerodrome at Stony Cross, chewing bar tape trying to get back on. Fast down Bolderwood drive to the A35 then the Ornamental drive to Brockenhurst, the group is still large but the riding is disciplined, in twos, rotating the front. An easterly breeze blows us briskly to Burley and across Slap Bottom (go on then, if you must) and a wave to the Sotonia cc coming the other way. Lined out down Braggers lane, we can smell the homemade cakes and the hole-strewn Dragons lane is ridden a bit too fast but it was good fun. The usual steamy, endorphin fueled chatter at the HQ is kind of what its all about, a big thanks to all at the Arrow who allowed us to indulge ourselves!

Hindes Named in GB Team for Swiss Track Challenge

BC Press Release
OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST PHIL HINDES BACK IN ACTION
British Cycling’s two-time Olympic gold medallist Phil Hindes is set to return to track racing in Great Britain Cycling Team colours at the Track Cycling Challenge in Grenchen, Switzerland, from 2 – 3 December. From there, he will contest the Six Day Amsterdam event from 6 – 11 December.

Phil will be joined in Grenchen by world cup gold medallists Kian Emadi, Ollie Wood, Ellie Dickenson, Manon Lloyd and Emily Nelson and their fellow senior academy riders Angus Claxton, Ethan Hayter, Joe Holt and Matt Walls. At the Amsterdam Six Day, Matt Bostock and Joe Holt will pair up.

Hindes, who was triumphant in the team sprint at both the London and Rio Olympic Games, raced at the second round of the Revolution event in Glasgow in October and is now hoping to supplement the points he earned by competing at the two forthcoming CL1 events.

Speaking of returning to competition, Phil said: “I’ve enjoyed having some time off after winning my second Olympic gold medal but I’m now looking forward to getting back to cycling. My focus has reset for this season, and I’m aiming to develop my skills in the other sprint disciplines. I can’t wait to get racing again.”

Matt Crampton Retires from Great Britain Cycling Team

BC Press Release
MATT CRAMPTON RETIRES FROM THE GREAT BRITAIN CYCLING TEAM

British Cycling has today announced the retirement of one of its longest serving track sprinters, Matt Crampton, who has been a member of the Great Britain Cycling Team’s Olympic programmes for over thirteen years.

Since joining the Olympic Development Programme (as it was then known) in 2003, Crampton has enjoyed a successful cycling career winning medals at Commonwealth and World Cup level.
During his years as a junior, he was crowned as the junior European champion in both the sprint and keirin events in 2004 as well as winning the silver medal a in the keirin at that year’s Youth Commonwealth Games in Australia.
In 2006, he represented England in the Commonwealth Games, this time at senior level, winning the silver medal in the team sprint, alongside Jamie Staff and Jason Queally.
In 2011 Matt won the gold medal in the keirin at the UEC Track Cycling European Championships and backed that up by winning the bronze medal in the team sprint at the World Championships. Matt went on to win the bronze medal in the 2012 European Track Championships alongside Callum Skinner and Lewis Oliva.
At the UCI Track World Cup in Manchester in November 2013, Matt won the team sprint bronze medal along with Jason Kenny and Phil Hindes. The trio went on to win silver at the next round in Mexico with Matt also adding a gold medal in the keirin to his collection. Matt missed out on Rio Olympic selection due to an injury.
Matt said: “Since starting on the squad in 2003 on the junior programme I have been training hard and dedicating my life to the British Cycling Olympic Programme. Although I was not selected to represent GB at the Olympics, I am extremely proud of all I have achieved throughout my career and of the effort that was given relentlessly to be a fundamental part of the squad.

“With this in mind, I have taken the decision that now is the right time for me to retire from professional cycling in order to enable me to pursue new challenges and develop myself in other ways including setting up my own coaching brand "Podium Fitness" along with other projects.

“I am appreciative and grateful of all the support given to me by the staff and fellow riders both past and present who dedicate themselves to British Cycling and its endeavours. I have forged great friendships during my time on the squad and wish everyone the best for the future.”
Former team mate Sir Chris Hoy said: “Matt was one of the hardest working, consistent and well liked members of the team over the last decade. The way he approached his career in such an unassuming and professional manner always impressed me. We had some great battles in individual events over the years and some great victories together in the team sprint. I’d like to congratulate him on a fantastic career and wish him the very best of luck on his next chapter.”

Iain Dyer, one of Matt’s former coaches and current head coach at British Cycling said: “Matt has had a stellar career with the Great Britain Cycling Team and he can be very proud with what he’s achieved. The podium results speak for themselves, but Matt has also proven himself to be a strong team player within the sprint squad, challenging them for their position within the team and pushing their development on in the process. In addition to his achievements on the bike, Matt has always shown a keen interest in the coaches’ work and the science behind what they do, which I think sets him up nicely for the next stage of his career with Podium Fitness. On behalf of the Great Britain Cycling Team I’d like to wish Matt the best of luck for his future.”

Support Cycling in the South, Volunteer as a British Cycling Accredited Marshal

Support cycling in the South Region: volunteer as a British Cycling Accredited Marshal!

British Cycling is now looking for volunteers in the South Region to become Accredited Marshals at road cycling events. An Accredited Marshal is a trained road cycling marshal who is legally empowered to stop and hold traffic during a race using a new Stop Cycle Race Sign approved by the Department for Transport. Why volunteer?
By volunteering as an Accredited Marshal you will be playing an important role in securing the future of road racing in this country by helping us to make staging road races easier, more professional and, most importantly of all, safer for riders and other road users. You’ll also be helping to make sure that these great events continue happening in your local community and helping British Cycling to provide our next generation of cycling talent with the opportunity to race safely and regularly on Britain’s roads.
Getting Involved: British Cycling will provide you with the training you need including an online module and a practical training session. After this you will be ready to start marshalling! Each marshal is expected to commit to a minimum of five races.
A thank you from British Cycling!
As a thank you for your time, support and hard work we’ll be giving all Accredited Marshals who attend the training course a free British Cycling Bronze Membership. Volunteers will also be awarded with a certificate and receive free Accredited Marshal clothing. For more information and to register your interest in volunteering please contact Grant Bayton, British Cycling Regional Events Officer for the South Region on 07940 302 249 or grantbayton@britishcycling.org.uk. britishcycling.org.uk/accreditedmarshal

Dorset Road Race League, Hatfield & Haycock Take Individual Honours

Dorset Road Race League, Molly Haycock (Bournemouth Arrow) & Ed Hatfield (Primera TeamJobs) take individual honours.
The Men's competition was dominated with a year long Moreton battle between the lone Cannondale rider James Horton and the Primera TeamJobs duo of Ed and Jason Gault. Despite the fact that James brough home four league wins this year, it wasn't quite enough to overhaul an ever-improving Ed, who took a much-anticipated win and a number of podiums at Moreton, along with a haul of points gained at the Henstridge crits and a number of the high-scoring weekend road races. The result of which allowed Ed to nudge in to the lead by just a single point and take the win! Luke Nolan (Cycology Sunwise) took two wins and four podium places in the six Henstridge crit races, which earned him a well-deserved third place overall.
The Ladies competition included additional races this year and the top three in the league ended up very close on points. Laura Rayner (Westbury Wheelers) had made notable gains in speed this year and took three wins and six podium places at Moreton. However, it was the canny riding of Molly Haycock (Bournemouth Arrow) who took the league title with a dominant seven Moreton wins! Consistency won the league title for Charmain Walby (Mud Sweat n Gears) last year and this year it worked well for her again this year, seeing her taking third place overall.
In the team competition, points from Calum Croft, Ed Hatfield, Oscar Hutchings, David Pusey, Jacob Aries, Alex Hart, Jason Gault, and Josh Hooper easily earned the win for Primera TeamJobs, with Tri UK and UK-Biking Copyrite coming in 2nd and third respectively.
Charmain Walby and Sarah Wise earned the win for Mud Sweat n Gears in the Ladies competition, followed up by Bournemouth Arrows in second and Westbury Wheelers in third.

Dorset Miles, 4 Hours at Level 2, Just doing as i am told!

Around Hurn airport the bullying remnants of storm Angus left me nailed to the road, the horizontal wind sock seemed to jab me repeatedly in the shoulder "Your Late, Your late". Reduced to 13 mile per hour along Ham lane i was never going to meet the other three at Wimborne Minster on time, they would have gone for sure, leaving me to bang into the wind all day. Graciously they had waited, even buying my exaggerated excuse, no doubt they will throw it back in my face next week, next month, next year and quite rightly so. The three were only two, at least i had got out of bed,you know who you are, one missed ride too easily turns into two. Heading north on the Cranborne road i follow the power meters in front, towing me on the flat, a bit too slow on the hills, the discipline to stay in the zone, the key to this session. On to Sixpenny Handley & Tollard Royal, the climb out of the village is steep only at the bottom, the data feedback keeps the other two controlled on the hill so i behave myself as well. The storm has left debris on the roads, the descent of Zig Zag covered in wet leaves, i would have happily unclipped. Up to Shaftesbury, we stop for coffee, elevenses on a training ride? not something i usually approve of, though secretly i enjoyed it and we are soon on our way. Retracing to Zig Zag, the leaves presented no problem on the way up and it feels like level two to me. The route lacks imagination but the others are box-ticking and hey, i am just doing as i am told . The wind is on our backs as we scream down to Farnham, the A354 and back to Horton & Wimborne. I wave good bye to the Watt slaves, happy to ride home unscripted but probably at L2. Some company at Parley Cross politely asks for a tow, that was nice, so we exchange pleasantries bowling around the airport again at 20mph for very little effort, (speed is always a poor indicator of performance). Closer to home i can see my house but i go around the block, 70 is always better than 69.7, what's that all about?

New Forest XC, Horton Wins, Heartbreak for Hooper!

James Horton (Cannondale) won the New Forest XC, taking full advantage of the cruel misfortune that befell long time leader, Josh Hooper (UK Biking-Copyrite). Hooper looked to have the race in the bag holding a lead of over 40 seconds as he started the last 4.5 km lap but a snapped chain left him a mere spectator as Horton sailed by, his victory wheelie rubbing salt in the wounds. It was hard not to feel for Hooper, he had ridden strongly, taken the race confidently to the opposition and ended up with nothing, 20th place a lap down will hurt.
Race favourite and winner last year Kim Little (Merida Factory Racing) led the charge from the start stringing out the 100 plus field across the grass and into the sparse woodland.
Only Tony Revel (Off-Camber) could live with Little as the pair pulled out a lead of 30 seconds on the first lap, the heavy rain of the previous day causing few problems on a course now bathed in bright sunlight.
The smart money was on the normally dependable Little it seemed but one lap later we had a race on our hands as Hooper, Horton and Ross Smith (UK Biking) worked their way back on.
Little appeared rattled, Revel took a tumble & Horton watched from the back as Hooper looked the more likely, pulling comfortably away as the race went into the second hour. Little had the courage to get across to Hooper but not the legs to stay with him, the normally solid Merida man, surprisingly paying for his effort.
Revel too was feeling the pace being caught and passed by Smith who had ridden strongly to stay in contention.
Julia Hamlin won the womens race, ahead of Zoe Buckland (Off-Camber) & Kym Harvey.
Hamlin fell heavily whilst leading but was quickly back on the bike in what turned out to be a muddy time trial.
The 2 hour enduro at Avon Tyrell activity centre on the south western edge of the forest was preceded by an impeccably observed 2 minutes silence on this remembrance Sunday. The New Forest XC enjoyed support from the Eight Arch Brewery Company, the free beer going down well post race!
