Warren Jesse Wins Purbeck Jubilee Road Race

Warren Jesse (Pedal Heaven Excel Academy) won the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers Purbeck Road Race at Wool in Dorset, only showing his face at the front when it mattered most. The 41 year old, former mountain biker, expertly reading the 60 mile race, hiding in the wheels as others burnt their matches before winning the uphill finale.
Paul Hart (Southend Wheelers) attacked repeatedly, held a lead of 15 seconds for a lap but could never quite get away on the tough 5.7 mile circuit that put paid to the hopes of many. Hart still had the legs to claim second, his earlier endeavours costing him the win, believed Jesse. Ben Lockett (Saint Piran) had tried to escape early on in the 10 lap affair but the fast pace and fresh legs kept the race together with more going out the back than off the front.
The always aggresive Ed Hatfield (Primera-TeamJobs) & Stuart Peckham (Sotonia CC) held a small gap as the bunch rolled along the narrow lane behind Lulworth Castle but as the race turned left to climb Newtown Hill they were back in the wheels.
Hart enjoyed his lap of freedom as they climbed the hill for the fifth time but was never out of sight, the south westerly breeze making it hard for solo glory.
Inevitably Hart was caught as William Everson (Dulwich Paragon) & Ian Cullen (Mid Devon RC) forged ahead, Cullens team mate, top tester, Matt Langworthy bridged across in a move that had been planned in the car park pre-race.
The first part of the tactic worked well, the second part proved harder to execute as the trio, like all before them, could not stay away.
Mike Ford (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts), ever present at the front of the race, tried on the climb with two laps to go but lacked the acceleration to make the chasers think twice.
At the bell it was the gallant Hart again, a final throw of the dice perhaps but there would be no double six as Matt Downie led the chase, a winner on the course in July, Downie was heavily marked, denying him the freedom he had enjoyed in the summer.
Jesse, from Fleet in Hampshire, was satisfied with his days work after "too many near-misses this season", the confidence to ride at the back, matched by the power to ride at the front, both key to his success.
