Whitewick pushes Ben to new PB writes Andrew Hanley..........
New Forest Cycling Club held round 5 of the NFCC 10 series on the flat P311 course this week. The course heads south from Ringwood to Sopley and back to Ringwood again. A few sharp showers had peppered the day, but the riders were greeted with dry overcast conditions with a stiff westerly breeze which added to the challenge of the event by catching the riders out on open stretches of the course. Course record holder Steve Whitewick added a bit of spice to the event by starting directly behind current 10 series leader and NFCC winner on the night, Ben Boardman. “Having Steve behind me really drove me on to avoid the ‘catch’” Ben stated after the event as he set a new personal best by 12 seconds in 22:25. Sacha Ring (22:25) also recorded a PB in second place heading off James Bannister (22:55) in third and Antony Green (22:57) in fourth. James was thrilled with holding Antony off as he was 15 seconds behind at the turn. After the event James commented that “wow, that really hurt tonight”.
Lyndon Thompson is proving to be the class of the field so far in Division 2 with another victory, again breaking the 25 minute mark in 24:58. Bob Dowling held off Richard Mason in third by 14 seconds in 25:50 and 26:04 respectively.
The rapidly improving juvenile, Oliver Moody dug deep to hold off Adrian Hunt in Division 3 by a mere 6 seconds recording times of 27:39 and 27:45. Simon Longhurst made up the top three in 28:58.
Steve Whitewick representing Velo Refined Aero was the fastest of the private entries ducking under 22 minutes in 21:56, but was not able to catch Ben on the road. Julia Shaw (Drag2Zero) dived under the 23 minute mark….just, in 22:59.
