Bob Joliffe reports……..SOUTHAMPTON-based Jon Dibben (Hargroves Cycles) took fifth place in the World Cycling Championship Junior Road Race at Valkenburg, Holland on Sunday.The 18-year-old from Ashurst who started his cycling career as a schoolboy with New Forest CC crossed the line in fifth place at the end of the 128km race after Slovenian Matej Mohoric launched his winning attack near the summit of the feared Cauberg climb with just a kilometre to go.No-one had an answer to Mohoric’s power and he stayed clear to take a deserved victory.Australian Caleb Ewan took silver in the bunch gallop from Croatian Josip Rumac while Dibben finished fifth behind Italy’s Zurlo.Dibben later told Cycling Weekly: “I wasn’t really looking to get a result in the road race, so to finish in the top five, I’ve got to be happy with that.“It was a really good team ride, and the lead out on the last lap for me was perfect, they put me exactly where I needed to be. It was pretty close on the line.”Earlier in the week Dibben had taken 17th place in the 26.6km World Junior Time Trial Championship, 50 seconds behind Gold Medallist Oscar Svenson of Norway.
West is best! Stuart Martingale was the fastest of three Sotonia CC riders who travelled west for the Yeovil CC 10 on Saturday, finishing ninth in 21-54 behind winner Robin Coomber of Cadence Racing Team with 20-08.Others: Darren Lewis (Poole Whlrs) 22-18,

Colin Crocker (Sotonia) 25-37, Chris Summers (Sotonia) 28-35.At the other side of the country New Forest CC’s Chris Jolliffe clocked 26-34 in blowy conditions in the East Anglian CC 10 on the Bungay-Redenhall road. Prolific eastern winner Liam Gentry (Strada Sport) took top honours with 21-01.
Cheers to brewery 10 New Forest CC’s end-of-season Ringwood Brewery 10 on the B3347 on Saturday has attracted a field of three tandem pairs and 47 solo riders, including 16 from the promoting club.Regulars Ray Hughes (Clarence Whlrs) and Wendy Pails (Farnborough & Camberley CC) look to be the fastest tandem pair on paper, while VC St Raphael’s Bryce Dyer and teammate Simon Berogna, Poole Wheeler Terry Icke, Bournemouth Jubilee’s Dave Pickering and New Forest CC’s own Gary Lock will fight it out for the top spoil in the solo race.After setting his tandem aside, Ray Hughes will also take to the road by himself at the end of the field and cannot be discounted from the awards.Event Headquarters are Bisterne Church Hall and the start time is 9.30am.
