The latest edition of ...a3crg's mid-week Greatham League was held in windy conditions that thwarted quite a few riders reports Dave Collard-Berry.....
A rather windy night greeted riders who had hopes of "PB ambitions" on the P881r a course that is often very quick late summer but not often in June. However this didn't put off over 130 riders entering for the 80 places on the start sheet.
Coming out top on the night was New Zealand Olympic Champion Rower Hamish Bond making his UK cycling debut with a stunning 19:04. However because of the wind most riders were slower than expected with Mark Smith off Crawley Wheelers being the only other rider sub twenty. Several of the regular "top" riders were shocked to be passed and put it down to having a bad night until being told of Mr. Bond's palmarès.
This Wednesday was the "Greatham Handicap" where riders were given target times based on previous performance, Kirsty McSeveney (Fareham Wheelers) & Jason Hayles (TeamSpy) both tied for the win with a 01:39 beating of their target time. Only five riders managed a plus with smallest being one second.
Looking down the top ten you spot several of the riders who live on the coast and wonder if their training and coping with the coastal winds gives them an advantage when conditions get a bit breezy.
