Prendas Turn 21! Dorset Based Prendas Ciclismo go from Strength to Strength!

Prendas Ciclismo was founded in 1996 by Mick Tarrant who spotted a gap in the market to provide keen club and racing cyclists with a more comprehensive choice of cycle clothing.
Whilst originally the only brand stocked was Etxeondo, Santini is now their major supplier who make the leaders jerseys for the Giro D’Italia, Vuelta e Espana as well as the UCI World Championships. Prendas also make use of factories in Italy and Portugal that provide it with access to top-quality garments that form it’s well respected accessory range.
Andy Storey joined full-time in 2004, using his IT skills to transform the business allowing it to process hundreds of orders a week, all securely captured through their online store.
They enjoy a well-deserved stellar reputation amongst their customers, with over 4,000 genuine customer reviews on the TrustPilot reviews platform, as well as being a Google Certified Shop.
Both Tarrant and Storey are big fans of the sport as well as cycling as a form of transport. Although neither now race competitively (both posted reasonable results in their racing careers) they enjoy the ride to work which often provides valuable testing conditions for new products.
Over the years Prendas have supplied many aspiring local young riders wishing to make cycling a career including Daniel Lloyd, Barney Storey and Darren Kenny. Even "Local Riders, Local Races" has benefitted on occasions from their support including clothing supplied for victory in the national 12 hour and 24 hour championship winning rides!
Prendas currently support the Dave Rayner Fund with donations to the charity in excess of £20,000 over the past three years.
2016 saw Prendas celebrate their 20th Anniversary with the release of a specific range to commemorate the occasion as well as providing the UCI registered DROPS Cycling team with all cycle clothing. They were also invited to attend the prestigious Rouleur Classic to provide the exhibition in London with a vintage jersey display and Storey wrote a book, The Art of the Jersey.
In an ever-crowded marketplace, Prendas Ciclismo continues to provide value for money to the serious cyclist thanks to it’s lean supply chain, agile business practices and buying power within the market.
Long may it continue!

Living on an Island! Q&A with Jack Rebours

Jack Rebours (Caesarean CC) turned a few heads at the weekend, taking third place in the opening round of the Knights Composites Class TT Series. The 20 year old lifeguard from Jersey lists pizza as his favourite food, the Red Hot Chilli peppers his favourite band and has his sights firmly set on the Commonwealth Games in 2018. We spoke to Jack after the Wessex RC promotion in Dorset and talked about the racing challenges of living in the Channel Islands but first what about that third place?......

"Today's race went well. I stuck to a strategy of riding threshold on the flat sections, above threshold over the drags and climbs and using the descents for recovery. In hindsight I did set off slightly hard which caused me to suffer on the drags in the last 5 miles but otherwise my ride went exactly to plan. I really enjoyed the variety of the terrain. The course had drags, flat sections and fast descents which kept the race interesting and served as a distraction when the effort started to bite! The conditions were great on the day, dry, sunny and just a bit of wind that seemed to both assist and hinder in equal measure. I was not too surprised to take third. I have put in a lot of work over the winter and spent a lot of time riding my time trial bike. My season last year was hampered by illness but this year I feel strong and like I have struck the balance right. I have trained hard but also taken time to enjoy myself and this has kept me motivated throughout the winter. I have also been working with Kit Chamier of True Food to ensure there are no gaps in my nutrition and that my training sessions are properly fueled and I'm feeling the benefits."

"

Q WHAT ARE YOUR TARGETS FOR THIS YEAR?

JR "My main target this year is to get results in National level Time Trials in order to qualify to represent Jersey at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The British Cycling Under 23 Time Trial, the National 25 and National 10 are particular targets. I am also traveling to Gotland to represent Jersey in the Island Games with the aim of winning the Time Trial and also getting results in the road race and criterium." I do compete in road races and have had some success in the UK and France. In 2015 I finished 19th in the South Regional Road Race Championships. In February 2016 I finished 40th at the Grand Prix de St Hilaire du Harcouet, a 130km French Elite National. I went on to win the Revolve 24 Ominium event at Brands hatch in September 2016.
I hope to develop into one of the top time trialists on the domestic UK scene and to compete at the sharp end of competitions like the National 25. Ideally I would participate in more road racing on the mainland but the costs involved with travel mean I have to be selective about what I ride."

Q WHEN DID YOU TRAVEL OVER FOR TODAYS RACE?/ TELL US ABOUT THE CHALLENGES OF TRAVELLING FROM THE CHANNEL ISLE TO THE ,MAINLAND?

JR "I flew to Southampton on Saturday for Sunday's race. The main challenge of traveling to the mainland is expense but there is a lot of added stress caused by packing which often involves dismantling a bike, making arrangements in relation to accommodation, hire cars and booking flights which can sometimes be disrupted by fog, which is hassle my competitors based in the UK don't have to deal with.A major issue with coming from the Channel Islands is that it is not possible to race frequently enough in the UK to earn enough licence points to compete in top quality road races. Last year I also had my entry to the BC U23 TT champs refused which was especially frustrating as I believed I was deserving of a place."

Q What about your training

JR "I am coached by Chris Mcnamara of Trainsharp cycle coaching and I currently complete 10-12 hours of training a week. I have completed up to 17 hours a week in the past but I feel what I currently do is complemented by the physical work I do around the pool. I have learnt from experience that less can be more and I don't hesitate to rest up if I feel it is warranted. My favourite race to ride is my local 25 it's extremely technical and has countless bends to keep you engaged and always seems to be over in a flash! "

Q Quick fire round : WORK? FOOD? MUSIC?
JR "I am currently working as a lifeguard however I will be starting a role as a Trainee Fund Administrator from April 10TH"

"Pizza.!"

"The red hot chili peppers have to be my favourite band but I listen to all sorts! For training I often listen to house, drum and base and trance. Chase and Status have helped me through loads of interval sessions! There's always a bit of rap in my warm up playlist andfor a time trial to get me in the mood to smash it, it is usually something by Eminem!

Q What about your support team?

JR "I would like to say a massive thank you to the Caesarean Cycling Club and my family and friends for all their support! I would also like to thank Rich and Tony of Big Maggys Bike Shop for solving the issues with my bottom bracket at short notice and ensuring my bike was race ready!"

New Forest CC Club 10,26/03/17, Report/Results

New Forest Cycle Club TWO UP 10 P614/10
Boardman and Hanley dig in to clinch win writes Andrew Hanley........
New Forest CC held their regular season 2 up event on the stunning P164 TT course, running from Boltons Bench to Leygreen Farm, Ipley Crossroads and back to Beaulieu Road Station. A wicked Easterly breeze ensured that the riders had to endure the first half of the course until they hit shelter past Pig Bush. Boardman and Hanley delivered a fine ride of 24.13 to win the 2 up event from Cliff Rowe and Will Soloman representing Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers by a mere sixteen seconds in 24:29. The pairs were neck and neck at the half way stage, but Ben Boardman and Andrew Hanley were able to stretch out a slim advantage over Ferny Rise near the end of the course. Boardman commented that the change overs were fairly slick between us but we nearly came unstuck right at the start as Andy couldn’t clip into his pedals from the off. Martin Turner and Phil Godfrey riding for Nieuw Bos CC made up the top three placings for the 2 up event in 26.15.
Paul Lockyer laid down a scintillating time in the solo event to record a remarkable 22:41. Paul had a clear advantage over the field and will look to challenge club champion, Ben Boardman in the club’s 10 Series in a couple of weeks, as the second rider home was Justin Priest in 25:44. Julian Porter completed the podium positions with a very respectable time of 26:37 on a road bike.

Hayley Simmonds & Joshua Williams Win Classic Series Opener in Dorset

Hayley Simmonds (Team WNT Pro Cycling) emphatically won the opening round of the Knights Composites Classic Time Trial series in Dorset. Wearing the National Championship stripes, Simmonds punched her way around the rolling circuit, dismissing the keen northerly wind that heralded the start of British Summer time. A time of 55:33 for the 24 miles confirmed her early condition and put her 1:59 ahead of Elizabeth Banks (Sunsport Velo CC)
with Becky Lewis (Mid Shropshire Wheelers) a further 6 secs adrift in third place. The expected dual with Sarah Storey (Storey Racing) failed to materialise, the Paralympic champion forced to use a road bike after transmission problems left her TT machine unusable. (Storey had used the road bike to ride around the circuit with her teammates the previous day).
Elizabeth-Jane Harris carried the colours for the newly launched team, her 57:40 just missing the podium.
Joshua Williams (Team Bottrill/HSSHire), 48:34, won the senior mens race, a much closer affair with just 17 seconds between the 25 year from Shropshire and his teammate John Dewey.
Espoir, Jack Rebours, (Caesarean CC (Jersey), 50:27 surprised a few taking third spot, the third of six riders inside the course record of 51.12 on a sunny, breezy morning. Rick Waddon (Para-T) won the parcycling event, his factored time of 54:05 putting him clear of Liz Saul (London Dynamo), 1:00:07 and Paul Thomas (Brighton Mitre CC) 1:30:10. Peter Nicholls (Race Hub), 52:28 beat scratchman Danny Axford (Artic Tacx RT) by exactly 1 minute to take the veterans race, local rider John Samways (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers), recording a personal best on a course used for club events. Another local favourite won the Veterans Target race with a plus of 15:18with Seventeen year old Adam Robertson (Verulam CC) taking the junior title, his 54:20, 46 seconds to fast for Zak Coleman (Team PedalRevolution.co.uk).
Rider Reaction
Hayley Simmonds
"it was a pretty tough course actually, a lot of the roads are quite dead and with the wind as well for the last nine miles, it was hard going. I am really pleased, the first time trial of the season is always a bit nervy, i know my training is going well but you never know how others are going. I was riding to power but on this course it is difficult to ride to average. I go over my threshold power on the climbs and then recover on the downhills, i had a 56 chainring on but even with that i was almost freewheeling on some of the downhills."

Joshua Williams
" I found it quite easy actually! Driving the course yesterday it looked quite challenging, but i felt good at the end. I caught my two minute man so i knew i was going well. I am riding the first four rounds of the series, me and my partner are getting married on June the 10th so i cannot ride that one, I need to nail the first four"

Rik Waddon
" it was alright, its a long way to come, with very little competition, i dont know why there are not more para riders, there are a lot of para road riders out there whether its the travelling around the country? i am not sure. I put a lot into it, i travel round to all the races and its slightly disheartening but at the end of the day its about putting a performance out but when there is no one to chase, you can lose motivation. Maybe they could put the Para riders off in the middle of the field?"

Peter Nicholls
"It was a good race, i came down from Leicestershire yesterday and drove around the course, the wind was a bit shocking in places. I came down with not a clue how i would go, i have been carrying an injury so i am very pleased with that, its good to blow the cobwebs away. I ride on power and feel, i like sporting courses, you wont see me on a dual carriageway, i like riding in the countryside!"

Classic TT Series Preview: Hayley Simmonds (Team WNT Pro Cycling), Exciting Times in 2017

Hayley Simmonds burst onto the TT scene winning the National 50 mile title, her first attempt at the distance, on Dorset roads in 2014.(Pic) Since then, Simmonds has dominated domestic time trialling, competition records at 10, 25 & 50 miles, championship titles in all four distances including 100 miles, two national TT titles & British Best all-Rounder for the past two seasons, the highlights so far of a cycling career that started with a modest circuit race win at Barkston Heath in 2013. The 28 year old former rower from Redditch is back racing in the south this weekend (26th), as she gets her 2017 home campaign underway. The top seed in the opening round of the CTT Knights Composite, sponsored Classic TT series, we spoke to Hayley on a rest day after a hard training block.

Q AS ITS YOUR REST DAY WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING? HOW DO YOU RELAX?
HS "I'll probably allow myself a bit of a lie-in and then do a 45 minute spin before breakfast. After that I'm having coffee and a catch up with a friend who I haven't seen for a few weeks. I often spend time on rest days doing movement circuits and stretching/core work too, though if I get the chance to fully relax I like to just sit on the sofa with a book or Netflix!"

Q HOW HAS YOUR WINTER TRAINING GONE?/ ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO 2017 SEASON?

HS "I had a fairly lengthy break after my final race last season (Chrono des Nations on October 23rd) during which time I got married. I started training again in late November but since then have done a lot of hours! I'm pleased with my training numbers, particularly for this time of year, and am looking forward to seeing how they translate into a race performance at the weekend. I've got some great events on my calendar for 2017 which I'm really excited about."

Q WHAT ARE YOUR TARGETS FOR THE YEAR?

HS "Team WNT has a really good calendar for this year and I'm hoping to be able to get some good results in UCI road races in addition to the TTs. There are a number of stage races with time trials in particular where I am hoping to do well. In addition I am obviously aiming to retain my British title and build on some of my results from 2016 in the UCI TTs".

Q YOU DOMINATED BRITISH TIME TRIALLING LAST YEAR, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR BEST DISTANCE IS? CAN YOU STILL IMPROVE?

HS " I think my best distance is probably the 10, though that might just be because I did more 10s than anything else last year. I do also enjoy 10s more than other distances. I definitely think I can still improve - there are so many factors that come together and contribute to a good performance and I certainly haven't perfected them all!"

Q WILL WE SEE YOU ROAD RACING FOR TEAM WNT THIS YEAR?

HS "Yes, definitely. In fact there are currently a lot more road races than time trials on my race calendar and I've actually just got back from a stage race in Valencia. I have a full season of UCI racing, with some of the British National Series events thrown in too. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to do much road racing last year but I actually had a very successful road season in 2015, winning quite a few British races, finishing 24th on GC in both Thuringen Rundfahrt (UCI 2.1) and Ladies Tour of Norway (UCI 2.2) and supporting Lizzie Armitstead in the World Championships in Richmond, USA."

Q DO YOU KNOW THE COURSE FOR NEXT WEEKEND/ WILL YOU RECCE IT BEFOREHAND? DO YOU INTEND TO RIDE THE WHOLE SERIES?

HS "I haven't seen the course yet but I'll try to recce it on Saturday. I'm hopefully going to do several events in the series this year, if I can fit them in around my team racing commitments. The courses are normally quite fun to ride and are much more similar to a UCI TT than a flat 10 or 25."

Q YOU HAVE SEEN THE START LIST FOR NEXT WEEK, WHO WILL CHALLENGE YOU FOR THE WIN?

HS "Yes I had a look at the start sheet when it came out a few days ago. Sarah Storey and her team have been supporters of the series for a few years now, which is great for women's time trialling, so it's good to see them on the start sheet for this weekend. Sarah will definitely be tough competition, as will her teammate Ejay Harris, who had some really good TT results last year."

Q TELLS US ABOUT YOUR TEAM SUPPORT AND BACK UP?
HS " The calendar and opportunities Team WNT Pro Cycling are offering for 2017 are well matched with my own ambitions and I'm really grateful to be part of a team that understands me as a rider and wants to help me achieve my long-term aims in cycling. I'm also really lucky to have help and support from key people like my husband Mark (also my coach), Xav Disley (Aerodynamics - AeroCoach), Alan Murchison (Nutrition - Performance Chef), F.A.S.T (massage/physiotherapy), Yellow Jersey (Cycle Insurance), and Helen Davies (Sports Psychology) among others. Having a support network of knowledgable, experienced people to turn to for advice and support makes my job infinitely easier and less stressful!"

Q...AND FINALLY WHAT WILL YOU HAVE FOR BREAKFAST ON SUNDAY?

HS "I'll most likely have a big bowl of rice porridge, topped with nut butter, almonds and banana. I've been working with Alan Murchison and following a gluten free diet since February 2016 and have discovered some great pre-race meal options that I would otherwise have never tried!"

Simmonds is the last of the seeded riders in the Womens field, her start time of 10:00am, two minutes after Storey, 09:58.

The Wessex Road Club have been running their sporting 24 for over 40 years now and race organiser Rowan Shepherd is proud to be promoting this national event.
Burden setting course record in 2016

Rowan Shepherd
"Little did I know when I won this event in the late 80's I would end up organising it, let alone it being a national event. It has changed a bit in that time, the WESSEX RC has been a stalwart organiser of this for many years, and where once it was full distance at 25miles, road works meant we had to shorten the event, which actually makes it more exciting as people ride for the challenge more than a time, that being said with some strenuous rolling climbs - a great time isn't always forthcoming. The Wessex RC is one of the oldest clubs around at 93 years young and has been known in its day to produce some super fast riders such as Harry Lodge who won Junior BAR and went on to race professionally at such prestigious events as the G'iro D'Italia. The fact that this is a national event this year meant we would attract some pretty fast riders, Dame Sarah Storey is riding and will be presenting the prizes also, which could mean presenting to herself, although she will face stiff competition from Hayley Simmonds i am sure. Our event has drawn some big hitters in the past including legendary Olympian Gary Dighton sadly no longer with us - but he set a blistering time in 2014 smashing Adam Tophams course record for the 24 miles in 51 minutes 41 seconds, a time we thought would not be bettered for many years - so much so I put up a £100 prize to grow year on year - but bettered it was only two years later in 2016 by Matt Burden (Severn RC) in a stunning time of 51 minutes and 12 seconds, perhaps this year we might see someone break the 51 minute mark and pick up the £100"

New Forest CC Club 16, 19/03/17, Report/Results

Lockyer storms home in a new course record
A blustery day greeted the riders for New Forest CC’s 16 mile time trial on the P165. The course starts at Balmer Lawn heads out to Beaulieu, round to Lyndhurst and back towards Lyndhurst. Apart from the stiff wind which aided the participants out to Beaulieu, the conditions were ideal on a mild spring morning. NFCC new comer Paul Lockyer laid down a significant early season marker by smashing the course record to come home in a mighty 36.32, with club champion Ben Boardman unavailable, Paul took three minutes out of field to second place man Antony Green in 39.34. Andrew Hanley made up the top three recording a personal best time of 40.31 and commented, “conditions were tough out there today, you had to hold something back for the return leg and not get too carried away on the way out to Beaulieu. Paul came past me like a train and held great form as he steamed off into the distance!”
New Forest hold a 10 miler on the popular P164 course from Boltons Bench next week, the riders will no doubt be looking forward to riding on the new tarmac recently laid on North Lane near Beaulieu.

Hutchings Wins Sotonia Leg Loosener!, Report, Results!

Roadman Oscar Hutchings (VC Equipe-Flix) won the Sotonia CC leg Loosener time trial on a breezy morning in the New Forest. Hutchings clocked 34:43 on the 23km sporting circuit, storming up the final climb of Pipers Waite hill to cross the line 68 seconds clear of Richard Gildea (Didcot Phoenix). Nick Tarmey (VC Venta) finished a further 8 seconds back in third place.
Another roadman, Matt Downie (Primera-Teamjobs), took the road bike event, his 45.50, eclipsed only by Hutchings in the 120 strong field. It was Downies second win aginst the clock this term, after his victory in the VC ST Raphael event in February.
In form Craig Wallington (Sarum Velo), 46.44 claimed second place by just 1 second from Ben Skinner (Bath CC).
Hollie Dowling ( Bike Jockey CC) produced a storming ride, winning the womens race and placing 30TH overall, her 41:16 over a minute clear of Sarah Lewis (Full on Tri), 42:19 with Michelle Walter (Bournemouth Arrow) third in 44:43. A cross wind made the exposed Stony Cross section challenging, the riders turning into the wind at Nomansland to start the stiff climb up to the chequered board, cruelly placed 150 metres over the top of the hill.

RIDER REACTION
Oscar Hutchings
"I am pleased with that, i fit in a few time trials when i can but i love the road racing too much, i might enter the National 10 this year though i would like to do some of the bigger races. I havent got into the aroedynamic knee socks yet, i might get there eventually! I have the Scorpion road race next week, a crit or two then the Prems start in April"

Matt Downie
"Its nice to win, i am pretty happy with it, across the top of the forest was not too bad but coming up the hill into the headwind was hard. Things have not gone so well on the road, a few punctures and crashes, i am hoping it is just the bad spell of the year and thIngs will improve, to win this is great".
