Perfs Pedal Race 2016, Start List & Preview

Rory Townsend leads Yanto Barker & Marcin Bialoblocki(ONE Pro cycling) at Perfs 2015

Pedal Heaven RT look set to dominate the Perfs Pedal race in the same way OnePro Cycling bossed the season opener last year. The UCI Continental outfit will field a strong 6 man squad for the 51st running of this south coast classic on Sunday 14th February. Mitch Webber & Rory Townsend will fancy their chances and backed up by GB off-roader Grant Ferguson, Alex Paton, Joe Fry,& LLoyd Chapman it is hard to see the others getting a look-in.
Directeur Sportif, Tim Elverson told "Local Riders" " I've picked a team of three local guys and three new guys, the race is about early season race miles but it's also about supporting our local race and as with all races we will have a race plan that involves a team leader and be trying to win it."
Pedal Heaven also have their Excel Academy team in the race featuring George Stainton-Ellis & Will Harper, their No 1 ranked BC rider, Lewis Atkins will start his season in March. Al Murison (Unatt), Chris McNamara, Tom Hargreaves, Jamie Pine ( Nunn Sigma Sport London RT), Josh Lawless (PMR Toachin House) and Phil Trodden (Team Moda-Anon), Benjamin Marks (Cycleworks.co.uk) & Calum Croft, Oscar Hutchings (Primera-Team Jobs RT) will all look to feed off any scraps from the Pedal Heaven table. Former winner, Brian Fleming (VC Lincoln) also features in a full field of 80. Fleming won Perfs in 1992 and again 1996. The 74km race features five climbs of Portsdown Hill before switching to the Newtown circuit for the final on Hundred Acres Hill.

Pro Vision "Steve Joughin" Academy, Supporting Stars of the Future

The brainchild of former two time National Pro road champion and international Steve Joughin, a new junior team will be taking to UK and European roads this season.
The Pro Vision Steve Joughin Academy is based on a strong youth culture with the aim of helping the four riders realise their dreams and prepare them for their hopefully successful journey through their cycling life backed up by his successful cycle clothing business, Pro Vision.
None of the riders is yet a household name, all under 18, Ryan Coulton, Owen Lines, Morgan Hughes and Tomos Owens will be targeting the National Junior Series and home, the Junior Tour of Ireland and single day and stage races in Holland and Belgium, hoping they can change that.
“ With their collective abilities there is enough strength in depth to make an impression on this year’s racing scene,” according to Steve whose business is based in Stoke on Trent already has the backing of Continental tyres, O.T. E nutritional produects and KMC chains.
The management of the riders at races will be overseen by Peter Kay from Middlewich who Steve first met when he was a soigneur with the Percy Bilton pro team. Peter has been taking young riders abroad for the past ten years starting with Ian Stannard and Adam Blythe. More recently he has helped the likes of Richard Handley, Hugh Carthy and Mike Cuming all former JLT Condor riders.
Morgan, 17, is a second year junior who came into the sport at an early age cycling with his father and on club runs . Last season he rode with the Welsh National squad in the Cadence Junior race, Rs de Cymru and the junior Tour of Ireland. This year, as a good all rounder, he is looking for strong performances in the junior series, his eventual goal being a professional contract.
Owen,17, is also a second year junior rode for Steve’s Pro Vision club last year where he showed a real improvement with good finishes in the junior tours of Ireland, Holland and America. He is seen as a good sprinter with a professional contract also his goal.
Ryan,17, was a swimmer who came into cycling in 2013 riding local time trials and road races in his native Lancashire. He is a strong time triallist who can climb. This year he is looking forward to gaining valuable European experience with Peter.
Tomos, 16, is a first year junior but has been cycling for eight years already. Joining the academy is a natural progression. His year started with a track selection for Wales in Alkmaar, Holland. He is expected to see an overall improvement in all departments of the sport. He sees himself as a good all rounder with a sprint with an enviable long term goal of winning the Tour of Flanders.
Their UK programme:
Cadence RR
Mendips 2 Day
Cicle Classic
I.O.M
Spokes 2 day
Loughborough RR
Hatherleigh RR
Bath RR
Scarborough RR
Junior 3 day Tour of Wales
Their season is likely to begin with the Clayton Velo Handicap, the Mining Valleys in Wales and Holme Valley 2 day and a Belgium trip at Easter.
Steve said:” I know from experience that the hardest part of making your way in cycling is funding so I am really pleased to help[ young riders make their way in the cycling world. They are all promising lads. If we can help them fulfil their ambitions we will be happy.
“ I have been keen for sometime to put something back into the sport and so when Peter approached me I saw this as an opportunity. I got to know him when I was racing and he was one of the best soigneurs I ever had.
‘He is dedicated to the sport and has been helping youngsters for years all out of his own pocket he has great contacts in Belgium and Holland so these lads will be safe in his hands. You only have to look at the youngsters he has helped over the years back to Stannard and Blythe.”
Peter said:” I think the academy is really exciting and with not having to fund the trips myself, we can do a lot more. I love working with these youngsters and watching them develop and make their way in cycling. After all this time I have plenty of contacts abroad. It is great that Steve wants to help these youngsters. “

Bournemouth Council Release Track Statement

Statement from Bournemouth Council
In 2015, British Cycling (the National Governing Body) informed the Council that changes would be required in the management of the cycle track at Slades Farm.

When British Cycling originally provided funding for the facility in 2010, it was agreed that the Council would enter into a Management Agreement with Bournemouth Arrow Cycling Club.

Bournemouth Arrow Cycling Club subsequently formed a company, named Bournemouth Cycling Centre, as a not-for-profit enterprise to manage the day to day running of the facility on the behalf of the Local Authority.

British Cycling have retained an outstanding award sum, pending a suitable agreement being set up, with a requirement for some outstanding Project Conditions to be met:

• They want to see the Council undertake direct responsibility for the management and operation of the track facility, rather than through a third party such as Bournemouth Cycling Centre Ltd.
• They want to set up a Community Use Agreement between themselves and the Council, set against a development plan with the provison of usage data for the track.

Therefore, from the start of the new cycling season, the Council will manage the track directly, assisted by a ‘Steering Group’ of volunteers. This Steering Group will create a strategic management plan for the track, to include:

• A timetable of activity, including pricing structure
• A programme of events, including looking at previous and existing bookings
• Areas such as track operations and maintenance

The new Steering Group will be representative of British Cycling affiliated clubs, coaches, track users and Active Dorset (our County Sports Partner).

To maximise usage opportunities for all ages and abilities, the Parks service are developing an online sports booking system, which will enable the booking of a number of sports activities across the Borough. Whilst this is currently in development, this would therefore be the ideal time to include taking bookings for the cycle track through this system.

Bournemouth Borough Council is extremely grateful for all of the hard work done by volunteers at the cycle track since it opened in 2011.

We would very much like the current Directors and other individuals that have worked so hard in running the track to continue to be involved in the facility as part of a revised structure, working closely with British Cycling and this has been communicated to them.

We very much hope that this new way of working can open up further opportunities and benefit the facility and cycling as a whole.

Bournemouth Council set to take Over Velodrome Management.

Bournemouth Council is set to take over the management of the Bournemouth track. Bournemouth Cycling Centre Ltd (BCC) was set up in March 2011 to facilitate the use of the Slades Farm facility which opened in July 2011. BCC was registered as a “Not for Profit” organisation, staffed by volunteers. Bournemouth Council informed BCC of their intentions to manage the track directly, last August, effective from October 2015. BCC raised concerns around day-to-day management, particularly, bike hire and the centralised booking system, in response to these concerns the local authority agreed to reconsider the matter. However following a meeting in early December, Bournemouth Council decided to go ahead with their initial plans, including all revenue payments being made via a Local Authority BACS system. This loss of revenue will leave the BCC unable to operate, the Directors therefore deciding to wind up the company at the end of this financial year, 2015/16. A statement from BCC reads…
The Directors would like to place on record our thanks to Roger Papp who
has served the organisation as Operations Manager magnificently since its
inception. Roger’s skill, energy, drive and commitment during his time of
office will be appreciated as much by the successors to his duties in the future as his colleagues within BCC Ltd did during his time in post

“Local Riders,Local Races” spoke to BCC Director Alan McRae who added..
From a personal perspective, after the 15 years it took to get the Facility built, I’m proud of the way a group of Volunteers has operated the Centre over the last 5 years and how it’s use virtually 5 nights a week in the summer weeks has been achieved while establishing a very positive relationship with the other Community users at Slades Farm. Absolutely none of the bases for objection to the building of the track, expressed prior to achieving Planning Permission, have materialised.

“LR,LR” has also asked Bournemouth Council about the change in track management, including concerns over pricing and booking and recieved this statement..

South Inter-Regional Youth Championships-Call for Team Managers & Team Coaches

South Inter-Regional Youth Championships - Call for Team Managers and Team Coaches

Introduction

The British Cycling Inter-Regional Youth Championships are often seen as the pinnacle of youth competition in the UK. Coming towards the end of the season they offer riders the chance to experience multi day events in a team environment that takes them (sometimes for the first time) away from their parents. There are events for three disciplines: Road, Track and Mountain Bike. The UK School Games double as the Inter-Regional Championships for one of the disciplines; in 2016 this will be the Road Inter-Regional Championship

The South Region Youth Work Group is looking to appoint a Team Manager and Team Coach for each of the three Inter-Regional Championships in 2016.

The events pit the best riders in the country against each other and provide an incredible development opportunity for the selected riders. In addition, they are great development events for aspiring Team Managers and Coaches.

2016 Inter-Regional Events

The Inter-Regional Road Championship will take place in early September and be part of the School Games. There will be a wide-range of road-based events including a criterium, time trial, team time trial and road race.

The Inter-Regional Track Championships will take place towards the end of September. The event will be contested over the 9 World Championship events: Sprint; Keirin; Time Trial; Scratch; Points; Pursuit; Madison; Team Sprint and Team Pursuit.

The Inter-Regional MTB Championship will provisionally take place at the end of August. There will be a wide-range of off road events including a skills based competition and a full Cross-Country race.

The Team Coach will be responsible for:

Dorset Miles: In Pursuit of Round Numbers

Fog, not dense but enough to make us wet, as we spin out across the Avon Causeway. Legs sore from Saturdays hard Chaingang (“Hard” is a relative term dictated by form & condition), were little ring flushed through the lane to Sopley, Ripley, Sandford, North Kingston, Crow and Ringwood. Across the A31 to Poulner & Rockford, the ford at Moyles Court was not too high; we took a chance on wet feet and got away with it. Ibsley, Harbridge Green, Aderholt, left at Charing Cross to Cranborne, it was like riding in a cloud as opposed to on a cloud, wet but not floating. Wimborne St Giles, Gussage All Saints, Gussage St Michael and the short, steep rise to the top road, then quickly down again to Long Crichel. The climb across Horse Down to Manswood raises the heart rate above 80%, well 3 hours of recovery is nigh on impossible in company, perhaps on your own. Down to Witchampton, up to Gaunts Common, Pig Oak, Furzehill, Deansgrove and Colehill. A couple of 2 mile Sweetspot efforts on Ham Lane and around Hurn remind the legs of their purpose. The loop is not long enough we decide, so its back across the Causeway, this time heading through Avon to Bransgore, Neacroft, South Bockhampton and Burton. The cycle path alongside Christchurch bypass feels like cheating but the alternative is not very appealing, nor is the shortcut across the Waitrose carpark, it serves a purpose though. Through the shops and residential roads to Tuckton and back to Iford, for the sake of a round number I pedantically ride past my front door and around the block, anyone who says they have never done that is a liar!

Billyard Secures Dave Rayner Funding

Jack Billyard (Zappis Racing Team) is one of 27 riders selected to receive Dave Rayner funding for 2016. The first year Under 23 rider from Devizes, Wiltshire won the Southern Region Junior road title last term and caught the eye with a string of good performances.
Billyard will be based in Italy and is currently in Portugal with his Zappis racing team squad from where Jack spoke to “Local Riders,Local Races”………
We're in Tavira right on the South coast of Portugal at the moment until March for a training camp. It's a fantastic place to be with the weather and terrain being right on the edge of the Algarve. We're also going to race a few UCI and other nationals while we're here in both Spain and Portugal. We head to Rimini on the East coast of Italy on March 23rd and we'll be there until October 6th racing a unique calendar consisting of 24 UCI races against some of the best amateurs in the world including the U23 San Remo, the U23 Giro D'Italia and the U23 Lombardia.
It's been a huge change moving out here. We all live out together - there's the head of the team; Flavio Zappi, his wife Jayne, and 7 other guys who are all fantastically strong riders with a diverse set of abilities. The other members of the team are at university back home and will join us when their exams are over. It's a tough lifestyle with the training, diet and afternoon activity every day that varies between swimming, walking, table tennis (to improve our reflexes) and yoga, but it's an amazing experience just to be here and I wouldn't change it for the world!
I must take the opportunity to thank the Dave Rayner Fund who are vital to my sustainability here; they provide me with funding throughout the season that enables me to ride full time, and my parents who have been incredibly supportive of this slightly unorthodox career choice.

Peter & Jack Billyard
I also wouldn't be here without any of the help from my superb coach last year Martin Smith and the guidance from both Peter Georgii and Andy Cook all of whom I owe this year to. Here's to a great 2016!”

Jack will be writing regularly for "Local Riders, Local Races" during the season.
