Gilfillan Top Brit at Hawaii Ironman

Triathlon
After Qualification for the ironman world championships was comfortably secured in May at IM Lanzarote, October saw local Triathlete and experienced time triallist, James Gilfillan, head out to the Kona, on the Hawaiian Big Island, to compete with over 2000 other athletes in an attempt to add the Ironman title to his world 1/2 ironman title from 2010. For long distance triathletes the Hawaiian Ironman is the pinnacle of their career, ranking alongside the Olympics and Tour de France, and sees many thousands try and qualify every year.
The swim, bike, run event racks up 140.6miles of racing in anything between 8hrs and 17hrs, with the biggest cheers for those athletes finishing around the midnight cut off time! For James it was his first trip to the Big Island and the notorious winds, lava fields, heat and humidity. The target was a podium place in the 35-39 year old age group and confidence was high after taking overall victory in the Age Group category in Lanzarote, however nerves were equally high after spending time trying to acclimatise to the climate.
The high quality field and big swell resulted in a tough swim, with bumping and bashing being commonplace all the way to the last metres, exiting in 5th place in his age group the race was off to a good start. A brief headless search for his bike wasted a minute and a few places.
Out on to the bike and the race was really on and the opposition were quickly being reeled in, moving through the quicker swimmers, James hit the front of the age group race about 65 miles into the bike. Many of the professional women, who started 20 mins earlier, were also passed. The legendary winds put in an appearance and had a significant part to play, leaving some cyclists weaving across the road and some coming off their bikes, as the wind rolled down off the volcano catching on the flat surfaces of front wheels and bike frames.
Onto the run and whilst safe from the wind, the sun and humidity were going to play their cards. The run consisted of a 10mile out and back along the coast where support was regular and vocal, James lost a place in his age group, but kept a solid pace, keeping the leader in sight. A second longer out and back took the athletes out of the town and into the lava fields. The clouds rolled in to shade the runners, but the pace took its toll and first place pulled away leaving James to hang on to second, and hang he did. Finishing in a pb of 8:59:47hrs, to take 2nd place in his age group, 31st overall, and quickest British athlete on the day.

Dorset Miles, Wet, Wet, Wet

Another wet morning, another wet Winter, like last year perhaps, it is starting to feel like it.Six of us leave Bear Cross already wet and head to Wimborne, Furzehill, Gaunts Common and down to Horton, right in the village then quickly left to Haythorne. We go out of our way to allow a truck to pass, our co-operation goes unacknowledged, never mind. On to Woodlands and Edmondsham, Wimborne St Giles and Gussage All Saints, it’s a shorter loop today, it is pouring with rain, shoes are still wet from yesterday’s wet 2 hours and no one is arguing as we turn south. Moor Crichel, Witchampton, and Hogstock, a tight, disciplined, half dozen ,riding “level 2” and sharing the work, keep this grumpy old-timer happy! Tarrant Rawston, Tarrant Rushton,Tarrant Keynston, Tarrant Crawford, we are all Tarranted-out by the time we reach Shapwick. Over the bridge at White Mill, the oldest bridge in Dorset, so they say, to Sturminster Marshall. Crossing the A31 to Dullar Lane is no fun, it is still raining, just a little bit colder. The "white goods" dumped along the verge were left by no two-wheeled litter bug! Lytchett Hill and Pardys are always better once climbed then back to Ashington, Merley and Bearwood. The ratrace that is Castle Lane is just that! 3hrs 10

Jolliffe & Raybould named in Great Britain Squad

Dorset juniors, Alex Jolliffe (Team Terminator) & Rebecca Raybould (Poole Wheelers) have both been named in the Great Britain cycling team squad for 2015, announced today. Jolliffe & Raybould are two of forty two funded riders selected for the Olympic development programme, looking towards Rio 2018 and Tokyo 2022.
The Olympic Development programme (ODP) is a key stepping stone for junior age riders to develop as full-time cyclists. The programme is focussed on the rider’s long-term development and aims to provide a solid foundation for future success. Places on the ODP are limited. The aim is to prioritise riders who have the best chance of graduating to the Academy, and ultimately, the Podium Programme.

James Atherton & Rich Phillips-Schofield Tribute at Perfs 2015

James Atherton (L) & Rich Phillips-Schofield
When last run in 2013, The Perfs Pedal Race included the James Atherton Award for best placed BC South Region 2nd Category Rider.
James died in January 2013 in an accident whilst out training in the New Forest. It was intended to keep this award going in Perfs this year (2014) with a Trophy. Jame's Family and Friends had raised the funding for this to happen but unfortunately this years race was cancelled due to flooding on the course.
In March 2014 James close friend and one of the fundraiser Rich Schofield died after a tragic accident while competing at the Mountbatten Circuit in Portsmouth.
For the 2015 Perfs the award will be renamed The James Atherton and Rich Schofield award, in memory of both these riders and will be awarded to the best placed BC South Region 2nd Category Rider.

The traditional domestic road-season opener in the South started way back in July 1964, moving to its early season slot the following year. Promoted by Mick Waite on behalf of VC ST Raphael, Perfs has always proved a tough early season test, the vagaries of the winter weather as much as the course, providing the examination. The 2014 edition of Perfs was cancelled due to flooding, Perfs was also cancelled in 2003 due to flooding and again in 2010 this time due to poor road surfaces. The 45 mile, 2015 race takes place on Sunday 8th February and will feature 4 laps of the Portsdown Hill circuit above Portsmouth before switching to the Newtown Circuit, the finish coming on the second climb of One Hundred Acres Road. Perfs is open to elite, 1st, 2nd & 3rd category riders and features National Escort Group accredited motorcycle marshals and accredited road marshals.

Bournemouth Arrow 50 Mile Reliability Trial

Heavy rain did little to deter the field at the Bournemouth Arrow 50 mile Reliability Trial on Sunday. Seventy Four signed on and “enjoyed” a wet, muddy morning in the lanes. Hot tea and cake back at the HQ at Bisterne revived the intrepid hordes who were soon swapping tales of punctures and wrong turnings. The finishers certificate is a nice touch from the Arrow and the first one “LR,LR” has won since coming third in the high jump at junior school in 1969! The ride out to Bisterne and back gives us 70 miles and along with Saturdays 2 hour Chaingang provides a good weekend of Intensive & Extensive winter endurance work.

The Essex Tandem Weekend: Mucking about on Bikes!

“Local Riders, Local Races” is about racing, it is why we are here. That romance of suffering on a bike has always appealed, proper training, not “steady rides”, the taste of blood at the back of the mouth, far more preferable to coffee and chocolate cake (well nearly). However even “LR,LR” must kick back and relax sometimes and with the social season in full swing there is no better time to ride just for the fun of it and the Essex Tandem weekend provides that fun. First run in 1964 the tandem weekend is now in its 50th year and seems as popular as ever, with 37 pairings, 5 solos & a tandem trike riding the 2014 edition to Copdock near Ipswich.
Organiser Graham “Spyder” Adams (Crest CC) was sixteen when he rode that first event and has only missed one since, a particularly steamy weekend with a young lady proving a more attractive option back in the sixties. Traditionally held on Remembrance weekend, the format has changed little over the years, a Friday night burn-up to pub and youth hostel, with a nice comfortable hotel on the Saturday night. A following van carrying luggage made its debut in the early 70’s.
Lengthy pub lunches fuel the legs and Paul O’Kelly (Redbridge CC) leads the singing, often accompanied by John "Twiggy" Browning (Crest C C) on Spoons! Of course competition is never far away, sprints to pub signs are fiercely contested, even tactical! But the winners are forgotten before the first pint is dispatched.Landlords and Landladies love the late season business, the straining lycra, the smiling faces, the folk songs and of course the generous "whip round". The characters come and go, "Weapon", "Gadaffi", "S","Savage Mick" "Hippo" the tandem weekend has seen them all and survived. A tea stop in the failing light on Sunday afternoon brings the fun to an end.
Adams is a track fan but loves the road also and is no stranger to distance. In 1985, along with Phil Dade (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers), they mounted an assault on the Tandem 24hr record. At 438 miles the target was achievable but three punctures and heavy overnight rain left them disappointed on 416 miles. Dade moved onto triathlon but Adams returned the following year and stoked by Mike Smith (Maldon & Dist CC), they set a new mark of 466.57 miles at the Mersey Roads event. Adams also captained Smith to the 12hr record in 1985.
Over the years the Tandem weekend has roamed far & wide, Brighton, Stratford, Northampton, Buckingham, Felixstowe, even France. Wherever the destination, there is always time to remember, the "Last Post" is played (on a trumpet this year) and two minutes silence is impeccably observed. A finger-post sign on a triangle of green in Suffolk, a fitting location for reflection.
The years may not have condemned yet but they have certainly wearied, the Friday night thrash has gone, a leisurely rendezvous at an Essex hostelry is now the preferred option. London clubs are well represented, Crest CC, Maldon & Dist, Chelmer RC, Redbridge CC, Glade CC are to the fore but word has spread, with Chippenham & Dist Wheelers, Southampton Uni CC & Bournemouth Jubilee colours standing out. It is not about clubs though,it is about riding bikes, it is about taking the micky, mucking about with your mates, it is about comradeship. The 2015 Tandem weekend is on the 7th/8th November and is heading to Cambridge all the regulars will be there, the yard of ale contest, the fancy dress and of course Graham “Spyder” Adams!

Friends of Bournemouth Track Meeting

An open meeting of the “Friends of Bournemouth Track” will be held at 19:00 on Monday 24th November at Winton College . The Bournemouth Track at Ensbury Park is a superb facility but for competition racing to flourish and expand, a non-club aligned group of officials and volunteers is vital if the track is to fulfil its potential. The aim is to develop a team of qualified track Commissaires and helpers, enough so as to not impact weekly on the “same old faces”. This team would not be expected to organise races but could be an available resource for Event Promoters. In 2015 the track will host an 18 week league, a youth Omnium, an Open meeting with an additional open meeting at the planning stage. All those interested, regardless of club affiliation are encouraged to attend this inaugural meeting.

The “Friends of Bournemouth Track” is a

Hopkins Top Dog at Hop Dog Horn!

Lots of Photos on our Facebook Page
Paul Hopkins (Merida UK) won the Wareham Forest XC Enduro, seeing off the determined challenge of Dorset’s best All-rounder James Horton (CANNONDALE). Hopkins, along with teammates, Simon Allard & Kim Little, Horton &John Samways (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) had quickly established a lead on the 90 strong field, pulling away on the first 4.8 mile lap. ).
Samways could not live with the pace and was soon losing contact, Horton, however was up for it! Be it road, against the clock, or on the rough stuff, the 30 year old always races aggressively and was taking the fight to the Merida boys on the single track & fire trails.
Allard started to dangle at half-distance, a season blighted by injury, costing him the staying power required.
Deep into the 2 hour enduro Horton continued to make the pace, Little was looking good and Hopkins seemed content to sit and watch as the trio started to lap the back-markers. But any plans of a Merida 1-2, disappeared on the penultimate lap as Little punctured, Allard, still plugging away, caught and passed the unlucky Little, a third place bonus! Hopkins always seemed to have another gear and made his move just after the bell, pulling away on a muddy downhill section. Amy-Jo Hansford (MSG) won the women’s race, the youngster finishing ahead ahead of pre-race favourite Heidi Gould (Marin Bikes), with Loe Freer (DRR)in third place. Sponsored by the Sunny Republic Brewery of Blandford, the post race free bar went down well, pints of “Hop Dog” slaking the muddy thirsts!
