I was ranked on the third row of the grid so I had to pick my way through many riders as we sprinted down the start straight on full gas in top gear. Joint second into the first turn was an excellent start which left me clear of traffic in a huge field of over 70 riders. Ben Sumner took the head of the race followed closely by Nat Champ Ian field, Jody Crawforth and Luke Gray. These 4 riders broke away from the rest of the field very quickly and were being chased by another small group of 4. On the second lap the chase group had caught the lead group, but as they entered the wooded section the same leading 4 riders pulled away again and this time the gap grew larger than before. Then halfway around the next lap I had to back off as the huge surges by Ian at the head of the lead group were going to split us up. I was then in no mans land with the chasing group coming after me. Halfway through the race Ian Field was out on his own having pulled well clear of everyone. I was now starting to pay for my efforts but still holding on inside the top 10. Mean while Liam Killeen had made his way up from the same start row as me, and was now upto 3rd place in pursuit of the leader. Just past the hour it was Field who took the chequered flag followed in by Killeen just 47 seconds later with Crawforth on his tail. In the last few laps I was struggling with a touch of cramp and had to settle for 16th on the finish line.
The next National Cyclo-Cross Trophy round is at Southampton Spports Centre in a couple of weeks time on the 26th October.
