Bournemouth Track League, "The Longest Day" Report, Results!

Bournemouth Track League’s longest day meeting was a mix of match sprinting and endurance races, enough to satisfy both fast & slow twitch muscles. Lucy Gadd (Poole Wheelers) won the opening youth 6 lap scratch before Dan Lovett claimed the B league 12 lap version, escaping at the bell. Lucy Edmunds (Bournemouth Arrow) took the ladies 6 lap scratch, Edmunds & Rebecca Hurst (Poole Wheelers) would dominate the ladies racing, with Hurst coming out on top this week. Roland Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk) has been around more than a few years but is still sharp enough to win a sprint ahead of the youngsters in the A league 12 lap Scratch.
A series of match sprint heats followed, the winners going straight through to the finals later in the year, the losers returning for the repechage’s next week. Stand out races included Hurst undoing Edmonds, Stuart Root (Yeovil CC ) getting the better of B league leader Gareth Rose & James Brightwell comprehensively beating Morton and Tilley.
Rose got back to winning ways in the B league elimination race, a well-deserved victory; Hurst also deserved her win in the Ladies unknown distance, seeing off Haycock & Webb. Twenty years old Frank Kilsby (VC ST Raphael) triumphed in the A league Devil. The former rugby player has emerged in the last year, racing at Calshot, on the road and at Bournemouth Track, his Lock’s physique well suited to his new environment. The long, summer evening allowed time for some “Human Powered Keirin” youth racing, the youngsters urged-on their “live pacers” some complaining they were not fast enough! The feature, 80 lap Scratch race was introduced by PA announcer, Jason Falconer, to the strains of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s, “Welcome to the Velodrome (Pleasure dome)” and brought the evening to an exciting close. After the predictable cagey start an injection of sustained pace reduced the 25 strong- field to just 9 by half distance. Kilsby, Brown, Tilley, Nel & Webb all had a go but it was Richard Eastham who had the right mix of fast & slow twitch tissue to take the glory. Eastham went with three to go and had the courage and conviction to continue although he was seen to look behind a couple of times!!
