Hutchinson never faltered but Bottrill was in control and looked to be getting faster, catching 5-minute man Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) with 4 miles to go, his winning time of 1:40:47, a course record. Getting caught was an uncomfortable experience for the current British Best All-Rounder, Topham, was already 2:30 down on Hutchinson at the 25 time check but rallied well to take his first championship medal.
Tejvan Pettinger (SRI CHINMOY CT) had lead Topham by a couple of seconds at half-way, the former Hill Climb champion enjoying the “lumpy” section of the course, Pettinger slipped back to fourth on the flat but was pleased after finishing ninth last year.
Promoted by Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers, both the mens and ladies championships were incident-free, spare a thought, though, for Rob Sherrin (a3crg), 2:05:56, who finished standing up after losing his saddle with a couple of miles to go!
Championship Chat
Matt Bottrill “I felt good, I felt really good, I am in the best shape of my life really and this is just another stepping stone towards the BC champs in a few weeks. We drove sections of the course, it’s a great course, this is what racing is all about, my coach Bob Tobin said I could win by at least 2 minutes, the first 25 I just though, I can win the race here! I really laid it on up to Roundhouse. I have never had to defend a title so it was quite hard I was under a little bit of pressure. When I got the first time check of a minute, that’s 20 watts, I knew I was not going to crack by that much and I got stronger as the race went on. This week I have trained as hard as I have for the last six weeks, it is too close to my target race, I can’t ease up for this, the fifty is important but it is not as important as the National Championships. That is my target of the year, the aim is to win it, I don’t know if Wiggins is riding or Alex (Dowsett), I cannot commit to how I have done it this year and not have the belief that I can go there and win, I have sacrificed so much to be in the best form of my life and worked out what I need to do for that circuit, you need to know how to set the bike up, and I have lost a bit of weight as well. The next goal after the BC Champs is the 25, I have always wanted to win that one.”
Adam Topham "I needed ten more watts but could not find them"
Tejvan Pettinger "Next year hopefully go one better"
Terry Icke (70) 2:00:06, "I think i need to call Age Concern!"
