TIME pedalling in the Alps paid dividends for New Forest Cycling Club’s Hugo Walters who won Bournemouth Arrow’s evening 10 in a new personal best 23-19 the day before his 17th birthday.
Walters pipped multi-Paralympian Darren Kenny by a single second to take victory on Thursday night on the Ringwood to Sopley and back course.
Two evenings earlier Ben Boardman, who only the previous week celebrated clocking a personal best 10-mile time of 21-09 in the a3crg 10 at Liss, consolidated his lead in Division One of New Forest CC’s evening 10 series with another win which earned him 15 points taking his total to 89, just one short of the magic 90 for six counting events.
Boardman’s 23-34 was 54 seconds too quick for James Bannister, who holds second place in the division with 85 points, while Walters clocked 24-42 for third place in the event and the overall rankings.
Dan Mitchell leads Division Two from Keith Bradfield and Graham Lenton who both have 69. Antony Moyle heads Division Three with 83 points from Phil Jones (72) and Chris Mills (65).
Dighton wins Jubilee 50
Poole Wheelers’ Gary Dighton took top honours in Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers’ Open 50 on a new course west of Poole on Sunday with a quick 1-52-46, leaving the promoting club’s Jon Clemas to take second place almost four minutes in arrears with 1-56-42.
Dighton’s 69-year-old “super-vet” clubmate Terry Icke took third with 1-56-58 just beating Southampton’s Glenn Longland (Antelope RT) with 1-57-31.
New Forest CC’s Stuart Peckham clocked 2-06-52, Longland’s clubmate Steve Moore 2-08-16 and Crabwood CC veteran Dave England 2-14-20.
Two bronzes for Bob
New Forest CC veteran Bob Jolliffe returned from the World Transplant Games in South Africa with a pair of bronze medals.
Riding as part of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland squad 61-year-old Jolliffe, who underwent a kidney transplant in August 2009, finished third in the five-kilometre time trial for riders aged 60-69 on Durban’s seafront in 8min 54sec.
He was beaten by Koos Moerkerk (Netherlands) who was four seconds faster and 60-year-old Alain Fossard of France who took victory with 8-21, which also earned him eighth overall in the field of 75.
Fossard was marginally less successful in the following day’s 20km road race, over-gearing and losing out to Moerkerk in the sprint. Jolliffe countered Fossard’s early efforts to get away but had no answer to the 6ft 2in tall rider’s sixth power drive at a third distance.
Jolliffe soon dropped his American breakaway companion Thomas Jenkin and time trialled home to third.

Ben Boardman finished 33rd from 4,500 entrants in the London Triathlon while junior clubmate Ali Rogers finished fifth in the Junior Elite class.
