Club News :New Forest CC
WHILE the majority of New Forest Cycling Club’s racing cyclists have been clocking up the miles, John Heffernan has been keeping the speed in his legs on the indoor track at Calshot. Bob Jolliffe writes……………
Veteran John, from Brockenhurst said that with one week left of the winter track series to go he had “an unassailable lead” in the B League, and he would like to see more clubmates taking part next winter.
“We have five to eight races a week from 700m sprints to 5km points races. I usually do better in the longer races with a fairly straightforward tactic of 'go from the gun'," he said.
“It doesn't always work, the sprinters often get the better of me, but it has earned me enough points to win the B league with a week to spare.
“The races are as much about tactics as they are about speed, though it is much easier to be a tactical genius if you have good legs! The atmosphere is very relaxed with a strong youth category.
“It would be good to see some more NFCC riders there next year. It certainly beats riding in the rain and snow in December and January.”
John amassed 72 points from his six league outings beating second-placed Mark Moss (Poole Whlrs) by 28 points.
New Forest CC clubmate Andy Betteridge was doing well with 17 points from two meets but was forced out through injury, while second claim Forest member Rob Ellis (VC St Raphael) was fourth.
