The 48th Perfs Pedal race on February 10th signals the start of the road racing season in the UK. This traditional curtain raiser in Hampshire always attracts a quality field with riders keen to test their early season fitness. Last year’s victor, Chris Opie returns, hoping to be the first back to back winner since Tim Harris (Willeboro-Van –Peer-Kyso) in 1983/84. Opie will have the support of a strong UK Youth Team including, Ian Wilkinson and Marcin Bialoblocki. UK Youth will no doubt try to boss the race, riders expected to ask questions of the UCI ranked team include Colin Parry & 2010 winner Ben Stockdale (Spin Rotor/Primal Europe) & 2009 winner, Will Bjergfelt (MG Maxifuel Pro Cycling). Doug Dewey (Ingear quickvit trainsharp RT)heads to France the day after the race so will be looking for a good send off. Felt- Colbourne-Hargroves RT will be making their debut, the six man team led by Alex Higham. James Wilson (AW Cycles) a recent winner on the Ludgershall circuit is in good shape and could be one to watch Local hopes may lie with Will Stephenson (Rapha/Condor/JLT). Stephenson will be looking to impress after a solid winters training.A Level studies have kept the 18 year old at home while the rest of his teammates are in Australia.

What might happen: After a few early attacks a selection will be made on Portsdown Hill, perhaps even on the first lap. Those who miss the move will have to work hard to get back on as the road rises up through the finish line area. If the break sticks, the gap will grow as the lead group work together. The chasers must make contact before the hill or they will probably chase all day. The elite group will build an unassailable lead before fighting out a phoney war on the penultimate lap, sure, legs will be tested but no one will give 100%. The fast descent after the climb offers a chance to get back on and only the supremely confident will try to win the race from here. No, the race winning move will come on the final climb; with only a few left from the original break, the strongest & hungriest will take the win, high above Lord Nelsons Flagship, “HMS Victory” in Portsmouth Dock.
