Bob Jolliffe reports…….VERY few time triallists beat two hours in their first attempt at 50 miles. But New Forest Cycling Club’s flying Ben Boardman did just that, finishing the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers’ event in seventh position with 1-57-22.Second claim New Forest member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) beat Boardman by a scant three seconds while recording his best at the distance – 1-57-19 – for sixth place.Boardman has been turning in some excellent times this season with some recent 21-minute 10s, including 21-39 in the A3CRG 10 near Liphook on August 1 and 21-52 for second place behind super-veteran Terry Icke (21-06) in last Wednesday’s Poole Whlrs’ club 10 at Upton, but has been unable to dip below 21 minutes.Of Sunday’s 50 he said: “It may seem a little bit odd but I'd say it was my favourite race of the year. “After chasing my 10 PB for a month or so to no avail it was very refreshing to achieve my goal of a sub two-hour 50.After approximately five miles I was thinking there's no way I'd last another 45. I was struggling to hold onto 24mph but then things started to just click. Terry Icke came past for two minutes at 10 miles which gave me some motivation to pick up the pace. “From there I just kept increasing my average until the magic 25mph average appeared on my computer screen. “With 25 miles to go I just kept pushing hard up the hills and on the flats while resting on the downhills to cement a sub two-hour ride.“I'll definitely be doing some more 50s next season.”Beale, from New Milton, said conditions were good on the course west of Poole early on Sunday morning. He was really happy to have beaten his previous best by five minutes. “It’s been a long time coming, but it’s nice when it happens. PBs are few and far between,” he said.Spare a thought for New Forest CC’s rising star Gary Lock who punctured at about six miles and retired from the fray. Ben said he was “gutted for Gary who had targeted this 50 and punctured at five but as the pros say that's cycling!” First place went to Poole Wheelers’ Icke who sped around in 1-50-59. CC Weymouth’s Greg Parker was second with 1-52-46 and the promoting club’s Dave Pickering took third with 1-54-15.Others: Richard Davidson (Poole Whlrs) 1-57-11, John Clemas (Bournemouth Jubilee Whlrs) 1-59-58, Cliff Rowe (BJW) 2-02-07, Gary Tuskin (Poole Whlrs) 2-02-23, Kevin Ridge (BJW) 2-05-10, Dave England (Crabwood CC) 2-06-01, Phil Evans (BJW) 2-09-10, Terry Belbin (Poole Whlrs) 2-12-23, Phil Harvey (BJW) 2-16-07, Alan Sharpen (Sotonia CC) 2-21-18, Norman Harvey (Sotonia CC) 2-34-24.Poole Whlrs won the team award, Terry Icke took a national age record and became Wessex Veterans’ Champion and Dave England was second Wessex veteran.Beale also rode the Poole Whlrs club 10 a few days earlier and finished third with 22-03.
