Team Sprint.
With only two teams entered and no composite squads allowed the spectators were given only a brief glimpse of the team sprint spectacle. While not as fast as Hindes,Kenny & Hoy,the Poole Wheelers edged it, Fieldings last lap narrowly better than Stevens.
Poole Wheelers (L Pick,A Buddle,H Fielding) 56.97
Bournemouth Arrow (J Brightwell,S Moss,W Stevens) 57.52
40 Lap (10km) Scratch Race
A race for the stronger riders, with the early laps seeing retirements and lapped riders leaving only the usual suspects to fight it out.The speed in the closing laps was impressive. Stephenson went from 260 metres out, it looked too far but he kept the pace high and Fielding had no answer.

Next weeks racing will feature the Team Pursuit and individual Match Sprint. In the event of bad weather the competition will be delayed a week till the 28th.

Alan MaCrae writes.......The high standard of riding and competition shown in the inaugural BH Track Championships were testament to the progress in track racing and coaching that has been the backbone of the first 12 months of operation of Bournemouth’s new track. In the qualifying 200m TT round for the Individual Sprint Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) lead Will Stevens (Bournemouth Arrow), Will Stephenson (Primera) and James Brightwell (Bournemouth Arrow) into next week’s the ride off for the top places, leaving riders of the quality of Leon Marshall (Rutraining todayCC) and Andy Buddle (Poole Wheelers) to settle for the Minor Final.
Not surprisingly it was local club’s with coaching programmes who were able to field teams for the Team Sprint. Leading the Bournemouth Arrow trio James Brightwell’s opening lap from a standing start of 22.48 secs was more than matched by Les Pick’s 22.38 secs, giving an early lead to the Poole Wheelers. The Arrow’s Steve Moss’s super 17.11 sec second lap did some damage against Andy Buddle’s 17.41 secs. and handed a 0.2 sec. lead to the Arrow’s Will Stevens to defend against Harrison Fielding. Fielding’s speed endurance, particularly over the last half lap, showed through and his 17.18 secs last lap could not be match by Stevens’ 17.93 secs, giving victory to the Poole Wheelers by just 0.52 secs.
Two hard sprints in less than an hour deadened one or two pairs of legs as the riders stepped up for the Scratch Race held over 10 Km. Significantly it was riders not involved in the Team Sprint who were most active in the early stages with Leon Marshall, Roland Tilley (Ridebike) and Will Clarke (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) all showing at the front. Tilley’s lone attack was the most sustained but the gap never got even close to half a lap and the speed of the main group could be measured by the drift off the back of quality riders unable to sustain the relentless pace. The only question left after the regrouping was would the sprint be long or short. The answer came with just under 2 laps to go when Stephenson fully committed to making it a long one quickly opening a 10 meter gap. Only Fielding was able to match that surge, closing to a couple of bike lengths but it was not enough to take the £100 first prize from Stephenson, both riders leaving Buddle some 5 lengths back to take third.
Attention now switches to next week’s Individual Sprint with Fielding and Stevens favourites to be heading for a showdown in the Final. The Minor Final for placings outside the top 4 is much more open and, with 4 riders up in each race, much more difficult to call. Either way all riders in the Team Pursuit will have at least one, and possibly two, hard sprint effort in their legs before tackling the Team event. That will be something for the spectators to enjoy if not necessarily the riders. Daylight allowing, it is hoped to run a non championship Finale 5Km to round off the racing prior to awarding the League and Championship Prizes at the end of what can only be described as a momentous first season for local Track Competition.
