BH Track Cycling Championships 2012 /2

Alan MaCrae reports......The final events in the inaugural BH Track Championships continued to show the progress in track racing at Bournemouth’s new track. On the second night of finals, Poole Wheelers and Bournemouth Arrow took all the medals, a reflection of each Club’s commitment to coaching and rider development. Promoter Alan McRae said ”One of the main reasons for running these BH Championships was to set benchmarks and give a definitive measure of local talent as an encouragement to progress to National Championships and beyond. 12.49 secs for 200m, 56.97 secs for the Team Sprint and 5 mins 20.47 secs for a Team Pursuit may not have Team GB looking over their shoulders yet but it is a great start. Clubs and Teams that have ambition beyond local racing can go away and have something to work on.”
In the Sprint Competition, Will Stephenson left things too late and was caught out in the race for bronze with a great change of speed by James Brightwell (Bournemouth Arrow), a complete newcomer to track cycling this year. The big clash in the Sprint Final, as predicted, was between Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) and Will Stevens (Bournemouth Arrow) with Fielding producing the fastest last 200m ever in competition at Bournemouth and proving just too much for Stevens.

In the Team Pursuit Final both Poole Wheelers and Bournemouth Arrow teams had to ride managed efforts to get the most out of the team with Gordon Skillen doing well to contribute to the strong Poole team of Andy Buddle, Daryl Price and Harrison Fielding. For the Arrow it was a question of testing the recovery of James Brightwell and Will Stevens after the Sprint alongside Steve Moss and Barrie Watkinson. Poole started strongly and were in danger of being headed setting the standard for other Clubs and Teams to emulate.

In the non-counting Finale 5Km Scratch Race, Will Stephenson took his previous frustrations out on the opposition striking for home pursuit style from 5 laps out to win the final race of the season timed at an impressive 28 miles per hour for the distance. For an outdoor track, that is progress.
