Storey Storms to Gold!

Sarah Storey won gold in the 500m Time Trial on the opening day of the World Championships in Los Angeles. Recording 37.371, Storey's victory was never in doubt. The world champion spoke as she cooled down on the rollers "Really happy to win the 500m,it's always a bit tense when the world record holder rides!(China's Ju Fang Zhou) I have won this event 3 years on the trot now which is a surprise for a diesel like me!!"

Silver & bronze went to the American's Greta Neimanas and Jennifer Schulbe. Shortly after Sarah's lap of honour, tandem pair Helen Scott & Aileen McGlynn took silver in the 3,000m pursuit, giving second best to the Irish pairing, Frances Meehan & Catherine Walsh. The girls had gone 3.38 in qualifying but faded to 3.42 in the final. Helen "Scottie" Scott said " I could feel it in my legs as soon as we left the gate" They ride the 1km time trial on Friday and will hope to turn silver into gold.

Fiona Duncan & Lora Turnham had to settle for fourth place after a gutsy ride that was not quite good enough. Day 2 promises to be exciting with all of the British squad in action, apart from Storey who has a day off. She rides again on Saturday in the pursuit and again on Sunday in the Team Sprint.
