Getting out on the bike over the winter can prove difficult for some. Cold winds, grey skies and the lure of the fireside all test our resolve. Terry Walsh encourages you to check out the local CTC group, enjoy some good company and get some miles in!!
Join us on our Weekly Cycle Rides. Led by Cyclists who know the lanes of Dorset,Wiltshire Hampshire & Beyond
The CTC is this country's largest national cycling organisation. It has over 70,000 members in groups all across the country.
The CTC was formed in 1878
Its patron is Her Majesty the Queen
Its President is Jon Snow
CTC Bournemouth is part of CTC Wessex. They have 3 different rides on Sundays,3 on Thursdays, a 60 mile Saturday morning ride & a short social Saturday morning ride. Local volunteers organise and lead all of these rides.
Most rides (club runs) have 10-20 people. They ride as a fairly loose group and are led by someone who knows the lanes and cafes. They might ride 10 or 20 miles and stop for coffee. People who cannot stay out all day make their own way home from there. The rest may ride another 20 miles or so to lunch. This is often a pub or some will bring sandwiches. We try to vary the routes each week and as far as possible they are along country lanes. The starting places depend on destination, often Wimborne for the west & Hurn stores for the east. We ride to places like, Tolpuddle,Cerne Abbas,Milton Abbas,Alvediston,Brockenhurst and Lepe.
The BOURNEMOUTH CTC groups are,
SUNDAYS, "Rouleurs" A brisk pace, short stops, about 60-70 miles in the day
"Inters" Ride at a steady but not terribly fast speed, 60- 70 miles.
"Sunday Potterrers" Slower & Shorter than the Inters
WEDNESDAYS, This ride is organised by the DORCHESTER SECTION and always starts at "Top o'Town", Dorchester or you could just join them for lunch.
THURSDAYS,"Thursday Potterers" Quite a bit faster than the Sunday Potterers more like the "Inters"
"THE ALTERNATIVES" Simply the slower alternative to the Potterers
"DORSET DAWDLERS" A slowish group!
SATURDAYS "CHRISTCHURCH to BURLEY & BACK" This group is very different. If you are new to cycling, this where you can start and meet cyclists of all calibre. Please introduce yourself at the start. People ride at their own pace, some fast, some slow and in several groups. Unlike all other rides it has become a fixed route. 10 miles out through the lanes a cup of tea and 10 miles back. This is a gentle introduction to cycling & some of the local cyclists, not a CTC ride anymore. The people who ride on Saturdays are from several different clubs and some from none. Meet in Christchurch at 08:45 and roll out at 09:00, home about 12:30
"SATURDAY MORNING 60 MILES" Four regular meeting places. A nice brisk ride and home for lunch!
