Thruxton "Mass Attack" Duathlon
Lee Piercy (Performance Cycles/Trideals.co.uk) won the Thruxton “Mass Attack” Duathlon, comfortably seeing off the challenge of former national age-group champion Dan McCarthy (Blue Seventy). Thruxton Motor racing circuit is flat and exposed and with a strong wind blowing, those that could produce the watts would win the day. Piercy & McCarthy broke away on the first 5km run to build an unassailable lead, with McCarthy edging it by just 2 secs as they went into T2. The 30km bike leg, however was to decide the race, with Piercy powering away to put 2mins 15 into McCarthy. Wick-Based Piercy could afford to take it easy on the final 5km run and although McCarthy pulled 40 secs back, the former Duathlete of the Year, Piercy, was always in control. Experienced Time Trialist turned Duathlete; Chris Birch (East Street Cycles) took a distant third nearly 4 minutes down on the winner. Piercy has had a disappointing season; hampered by a persistent back injury his racing has been limited. Free of injury the potential for more is undoubted, without question a strong cyclist and runner, Piercy is no slouch in the pool and has ambitious Ironman targets. Sore back permitting, Lee will be in action again this weekend at the Sandy Balls Duathlon, Fordingbridge. Last years winner James Gilfillan (Team Feat) has ended his season and will be marshalling, leaving Piercy the man to beat.
Helen Dyke (Exeter Tri Club) who first won the event back in 1997 has had an excellent season and took the Ladies race but only by a handful of seconds from Charlotte Saunders (Pure Motion Cycles).
