Local Cycling News

Sally Bigham(Ergon-Topeak) took silver at the European Marathon Championships in Kleinzell, Austria.Bigham broke away with Finnish rider, Pia Sundstedt after only 12km of the 90km race. With almost 3000 metres of vertical ascent and plenty of slippery forest singletrack, it was a technical course. Sally had to give second best to Sunstedt's repeated attacks but was comfortable in second place.

"It was a really fun course with lots of constant climbing, it was a tough course but i really liked it, said the very happy silver medalist, Sally went on to say "There were a few technical singletrails close to the start, so it was important to get in front straight away. Pia was very strong and deserved to win, i am now looking forward to the World Marathon Champs in two weeks time"

A wet, cold and windy morning greeted the field for the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 10 mile TT. Non starters included, pre race favourite, James Gilfillan (Team Feat) and Terry Icke (Poole WH). Gilfillan had stayed in bed, Icke was at the HQ at Lytchett Matravers but decided not to start. Paul Jones (BJW) splashed his way to a race winning 22.09. Jones has won both his clubs open events so far this year, his win in the Hilly 42km back in March his only other success this season.

Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) continued his good run of form with 2nd place in the John Andrews Memorial Road Race in Somerset. The first year junior was always near the front of the 65 mile race and when eventual winner Peter Vincent (Mid-Devon cc) attacked, Stephenson managed to respond finishing 8 seconds down.

Steve Dring (Team Echelon-Rotor) won the TLI Independance day Road Race from Glenn Longland (Antelope RT.In wet and windy conditions Dring held off the old campaigner, Longland.

..and finally, i have just spent the week working with the Great Britain Para-Cycling Squad on the Ride Across Britain. Going the "wrong way" from John o' Groats to Lands End, over 500 cyclists are raising money for the Paralympics London 2012. Covering over 100 miles each day for 9 days it is proving a real challenge and the wet windy summer has only made it harder, with the participants sleeping in tents each night. The Para-Squad were showing their support and getting in some good base miles, riding from Glasgow to Bath. Its a fantastic event, very well organised and supported and finishes at Lands End on Sunday 19th June.
